Depends on what you what part of "similar" you're referring to. If you're referring to ghibli-level anime, than you'll be hardpressed. One movie I can suggest though is one recommended by ghibli themselves: Kikirikou, a french movie.
If you mean western-made anime, there's Teen Titans (yes, that series).
If you refer to non-anime but ghibli-level, then there's a pretty wide selection, obviously. But I doubt you mean that.

Sorry, I was a bit vague!
Basically, I need a film from hollywood really that is similar to a Ghibli film. I have Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke so I'm looking for an American comparison to show the contrast of conventions!
If yourself or anyone has ideas, they would be much appreciated!

You haven't said if the film you want to use to draw (non)comparisons from needs to be animation or live action.
Must it be Hollywood or could you use a European film (you said 'western' in your thread title and there is a whole stack of western movies that are not made in Hollywood).

It needs to be main stream hollywood really so that I can contrast the conventions in the same genres!
Basically, a good hollywood fantasy adventure film that I can compare to spirited away! Doesn't have to be animated, but if there's one you can think of that would be even better!

people compare Spirited Away to Alice in Wonderland, though since I haven't seen the movie since I was like 5 I can't say either whether it is good or how they are alike (other than them both wandering into other worlds).

Technically, Alice in Wonderland was from England. Or Britain. Who cares, Europe anyway. But that's really the closest you get can to having a comparison to SA, since while I disgress the comparison, I can't help but agree to their similarities. Both are about girls stuck in another world with a few friends and foes along the way, and both ended their tale with a certain sense of self-discovery, even if Chihiro remembered none of it.
I can think of one for Nausicaa: Ferngully. Both focus on the destruction of the world, although Ferngully hits closer to home. I think Porco Rosso has more than a few candidates, what with all them aviation films out there, but I never saw any or never remembered any. Suggest you look for oldies though. Whisper also should have a couple of candidate available.
Can't think of any for Mononoke Hime or PomPoko.
My suggestion for you is to try searching for old movies, before the 80's preferably. Apart from the ones I mentioned, there should be some for movies like Grave of the Fireflies (shouldn't be hard to find). Totoro, I suggest hunting down cartoons, or Disney live movies. I'm not sure about Laputa though, I have a tingling feeling that there isn't any movie close enough to it's storyline, but you can try searching.
EDIT: Dunno if there's a movie for this, but for The Cat Returns, try Thumbelina. It's has a pretty similar storyline (Thumbelina, if you remember, was captured and forced to live with the mole underground as his wife, but managed to escape with the help of a few friends)

your right with nausicca and ferngully, and cat returns with thumbelina. i don't think i can think of any that is close to ghibli but that's me..with alice in wonderland it happened all in one day but with spirited away when they got back from the tunnel their car was covered with stuff which meant chirriro was there for a while.

If you're thinking of Alice in Wonderland, it is an English story, but also has American versions.
Do you have to go for a direct one to one comparison? Why not go instead for thematic similarity with similar genres, etc?
Like, there are themes you could work with in -- for example -- the works of Joseph Campbell especially "the Hero with a Thousand Faces." Look especially the theories regarding "the Belly of the Whale."
There are comparisons which can be drawn between all fantasy / semi-fantasy / folklore.
Suggestions to check out for thematic similarity:
Willow
Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
...I'll get back to you when I think of some more.
Also, the way I understand "Kamikakushi" is very similar to what happens in Alice in Wonderland, or perhaps even "Picnic at Hanging Rock" -- although that is Australian, not Hollywood.
You might even want to check out something like "Star Wars"

anyways you will be hard pressed finding a really, really good similarity. western animes are made for little kids. most western movies are made for a market, and have no cultural influence. and if they did have cultural influence it would be different. a western movie will always be about the action (since your looking at hollywood flicks), and the story line just brings the action.

I think by discussing this we are drawing comparisons - that there really are no comparisons. If you're doing a school study that would be the conclusion I'd draw after giving a few examples of why Anime is similar but so different to Holoywood animation.
