All miyazaki's movies r brilliant. But not all ghibli movies r of that high a standard, juz to warn u before u have too high an expectation for their movies.

On ur question, technically, Nausicaa is NOT a ghibli film. It was created before ghibli was formed.

Porco Rosso is a movie based in europe (italy mostly) bout a pilot who turned into a pig and takes place after WWII but has nothing to do with it. Its one of the more brilliant movies not directed at children. No spoilers, watch it to appreciate it.

Yes! Nausicaa is a Studio Ghibli Film, Studio ghibli was Formed in 1984, year when Nausicaa was released. But the first Ghibli Official film was Laputa, nausicaa is based on a Hayao miyazaki Manga book!

Studio ghibli was formed in 1985, not 84.

As far as I know, when Miyazaki created the manga, he had never throught of turning it into an anime. In fact, he said that he deliberately created a complex and sophisticated world that is very difficult to be animated.

With increasing popularity of the manga, it turned out that Tokuma Shoten wanted him to make an anime based on it. Miyazaki had to spend extra effort to shape the manga storyline to fit the limitations of a movie, and overcome various technical difficulties like the movement of the oomu.

Lots of difficulties, yes. In fact, after the release, Miyazaki said that he will NEVER make another movie based on a manga ever again.

Miyazaki's own reply to the question in an interview:

quote:
Were you asked, from the beginning, to draw the comic with the intention of it becoming an animated work?

No. If I draw a comic, I draw something not meant to be animated. Otherwise, there would be no meaning-for me-in what I do. Nothing can be less interesting than a comic that has been drawn with the hidden intention of turning it into a movie. Although there are lots of comics like that, they are inferior products. A comic book is a comic book. It's different from a movie.
Right now, we [Ghibli Studio] are powerful enough to plan our own projects and call all the shots, so it's easy for us to forget that that is not often the case in most of the movie-making world.
Whether or not to animate a comic is a matter of common sense because the decision is normally based solely on how many copies of the comic are sold. But there are also people like Mr. Ogata, with his Don Quixote personality, who wanted to make a movie because he was tired of working on the magazine. Or people like Mr. Suzuki(the second chief editor and currently Ghibly producer) and Mr. Kameyama(the first editor and currently freelance writer), who wanted to try something different while continuing their editorial work at Animage.
The presence of Mr. Pack (Tsutomu Takahata) as producer was decidedly significant, as was the participation of Mr. Hara, a top craftsman. A variety of things came together, and the movie was made.

Yeah Nausicaa was made by Topcraft
(who also animated The last unicorn & flight of dragons)
Many of the animators went to work for miyazaki when he formed studio ghibli for the production of Laputa.

Being a miyazaki film the rights were bought back by ghibli so now its a ghibli film.

Castle of cagliostro,Sherlock hound were all not Ghibli...but are also now part of the Ghibli dvd collection.
^^

wow, you are lucky. All of those films are excellent- I've seen all of them but Totoro, but based on reviews and word of mouth I've heard it is one of Miyazaki's best.

Porco Rosso is a great first Ghibli film to watch- it isn't quite as dramatic as Miyazaki's other works and thus a little more accessable. It's also slightly more of an adult film, with a couple of funny sensual jokes- both visually and in the narrative- and a lot of late night scenery and a setting that adults will probably enjoy more than kids.
I just saw it for the first time a week ago after I bought the new DVD- I loved it and so did my friends, but we all felt that the story didn't feel truly wrapped up. But we still loved the characters and the aerial dogfights and the setting.

Nausicaa is one of Miyazaki's best films, hands down. I loved it. The animation may not be the best, but the story is wonderful and the imagination is astounding. Yes, it is NOW a Ghibli film, but as others said it was technically made before Studio Ghibli was formed.
