Very new. Need suggestions! | |
Hi everyone. First off, i am exceptionally new to the entire world of anime. I have lived in Gamaliel, Kentucky for about 6 years. Popualtion of around 500. Mostly rednecks and hillbillies. We moved here from near Pittsburgh, Pennslyvannia for my dad's preaching job. So, it goes without saying that i have very limited exposure to this medium of entertainment. I discovered Miyazaki and studio Ghibli when Spirited Away came out on DVD. The only reason our local movie store carried it was because it won an Oscar, so thank God for that. The movie was like nothing i had ever seen before. I was amazed and captivated the moment i saw it. Since then i have purchased Princess Mononoke and just two days ago Laputa: Castle in the Sky. These two movies only made me want more. my question is: what should i get next? I love both the serious (Princess Mononoke) and the more lighthearted (Laputa and Spirited Away). Are all the Studio Ghibli films as good as these? and which should i get first? and what others (non ghibli) do you suggest? please add any and all comments. i really need input. This list of all the anime i have ever seen may help your suggestions and reccomendations: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Another question: The DVD's of Metropolis and Escaflowne are for sale at a store i am going to pretty soon. I have never head anything about either of these films (or any other anime as a matter of fact.) they are about $13 or $14 each and i was wondering if they would be good purchases. thanks alot. like i said any input is extremely desired and welcome.
Thanks,
Eddy
ps remember, i'm really really new, so be gentle

You should try out My Neighbor Totoro. As short and as little kiddie it may be, it's one of Miyazaki's best movies.
Kiki's Delivery service is also a nice one(unless you've read the book, Miyazaki dose a lot of adapting when it comes to books).
Porco Rosso is comming out this spirng, so keep an open eye for that one.
Grave of the Fireflies is not done by Miazaki, but it is made by Ghibli. You'll be needing a box ot tisues for this movie will make you cry.
Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro may be diffrent from Miyazaki's other movies, but still has the same glory.
here's my 2 cents!
Hmmmmmmmm... are the DVDs single disced or a box set? Also(as rediculus this may sound, it's always good to check) check to see if they're not boot legs. hey come in lower prices
welcom to ghibli online

The DVD's are from a used video game and movie store. they are in their original cases and they seem to be legitimate. they arent in a box set or anything. thanks for the reccomendations. i'm gonna try to get My Neighor Totoro as soon as i can. Its a good thing i came to this forum when i did. i was ten minutes away from purchasing one of those bootlegs off of ebay. thanks for the heads up on those.

Hey man, don't worry. I just signed up a day ago. As far as Miyazakis' movies go, almost all of them are just as good or better than his most recent ones. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was one of his first, if not one of his best. I'm still trying out other anime though, so I can't tell you much more than that.
