Hm, Misato is definitely an interesting character but that's to be expected after all she's been through. Though, I'm not a big fan of her lifestyle...xP
Oh a female character that's of my favourites is Yukino from Kare Kano. She's so much fun. Yeah, she's flawed and attention-seeking but her ambitious nature is great. And she's nice, like actually deep down and not just the front she put on at the beginning.

Agreed. To an extent. She's a little too ambitious and selfish though, even in her later 'nice' phase she's pretty mercenary. But cute though.
But Misato's lifestyle is a protective wall to shield her from the agony she's suffered, so peel that gently away and give her the support she craves and you could fix a lot that's broken.

he cooks for fun, steals from jerks, avenges his friends deaths(stupid peta), has a sense of a humour, a happy optimistic personality and likes cheering people up

Yep. I agree about Misato. She really is an admirable character and I really do like her, despite her rowdiness (or maybe because of xD) but that doesn't mean I like her lifestyle any more. 
Yukino...yeah she is very selfish and ambitious but that's what I like about her. Maybe I'm a bit partial to the ambition bit but it's nice seeing a hs anime character that's not the perfect little angel, selfless and naive, not that there aren't others...I just happen to like this one xD

It is pretty hard to break down a character. To stick them in a vacuum and throw stuff at them and anticipate the reactions is one way to do it. But i always feel like i am either over analyzing someone, or not analyzing them enough. I would try to keep it simple and say that Misato fills a role, and does it well. Both the admin part and the more human part.

Heehee, this is turning into a "post a pic of your favourite character" thread! Which is wonderful! Here's some of mine then...
First, Akito Sohma. A pretty interesting character. It's easy to look at him/her as pure evil, but you can also flip the coin over and look at why he/she's like that.
Next Hatori Sohma... I don't know, maybe I feel sorry for him.
Next Fai. D. Flourite... well, right now I mostly like him 'cause he's so cute, but I'm sure there a story behind him that i don't know yet. I'm only up to ep 8 in Tsubasa so there's still 44 eps to go.
