Spirited Away Time FramePost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by Axthion Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

I have watched the move many times and have been trying to figure out how much time has passed since the begining of the movie (all started after it was mentioned that they did not want to miss the movers wich they seem to have obviously missed). It seems like a hundred years have passed from begining to end. I foyu look at the entrene in the begining it is in fairly good condition. There is a stone path leading up to it. It is painted. No when ou loo at it in the end oyu seel the whole palce is now over grown. The stone path is basically gone, now covered in grass. The entrence is nolonger painted and is totally over grown with plants. The car is dusty and covered with leaves. All of this seems ot point to alot of time passing. It seems to be more than about a week which you actually see in he move. In the end you know she was there. She still has the band in her hair that her ffriend s had woven together. I would lke to figure this out. There really is not much to work with to figure this out from the movie that i have benn able to find.

According to my own calculations based on events that happened in the span of the movie, only three days max have passed.

Day one:
Arrival in the afternoon.
Request for work at night.

Day two:
Meeting in the garden next morning.
Start work at night.
First customer (see yubaaba's dialogue), stink god

Day three:
Before dawn next day, kaonashi encounters Anihyaku.
Mayhem continues until late afternoon.
Train ride late afternoon until evening.

Day four:
Arrival of Haku a few hours after midnight.
Arrival at Aburaya in the morning.
Returned to her world later.

4 days, but total time span is equivalent to 3 days.

On the presence of overgrown grass, there's actually a mistake in the animation there. The entrance may be overrun by long grass, but in the last scene, the road is completely free of grass just as they have arrived.

Either a mistake, or the entrance was originally already overrun, only it was cleared up when they first arrived, probably due to the opening of a 'portal' to the spirit world. Remember, it was already very late in the afternoon, the time of awakening for the spirit world.

That's more or less my full report for the time warp question. It's still not complete tho, i ahve yet to consider the factor of shadows, which if accurate, may further shed light on this mystery.

It does feel like weeks and weeks go by in the film, huh? I think it's because of the way the story progresses- very episodic like, with Chihiro going through visual stages in character growth.
But even besides that, very few films actually seem to put so much emphasis on the time of day as much as Spirited Away does. Whole scenes are dedicated to showing the passage of night, of sunrises, and sunsets. There's a lot of imporance in that. And because the spirits are out and about at night rather than day, the film has a very mysterious, unfamiliar, and almost unnerving flow. I think IGN's review had a great quote about it- they said it feels like the film is a passing stream of consciousness.

I agree with Roarkiller's calculations- I think only three days actually pass, though it does feel like a lot more.

There's a lot more truth in what you say than you think.

There's an important point i missed in my first post that actually presents a contradiction to my calculations.

You see, after the departure of the river god, Chihiro and Lin were eating buns under a full moon. According to my observances, less than 24hrs later, they arrived at Zeniiba's house.

Notice that this time, it's a half moon.

This could indicate that about 2 weeks have passed, or 6 weeks or 10, depending on how you want to look at it. If so, then it could mean that Chihiro actually stayed longer than 3 days, or it could mean that time passes differently in the spirit world, which would then explain both the time span of 3 days and the existance of overgrown grass.

However, it still wouldn't explain why the road was clear of grass after they pulled out in the last scene then.

Of course, one could argue that the moon might be in different phases in different places. Well, that's an impossibility in the real world, but in the spirit world, who knows?

Meh, still a long way to go before i can make any real definite answer.
