Akira was a classic due to its genre and animation, not storyline. If The Matrix was released during that time, it would probably have been hailed as the world's best movie AND made into a classic.

Well, that sort of did happen to The Matrix, just not to the same extent. When it first came out everyone was raving about it, but looking back it's kind of not very good. At all. I think people should be able to look back objectively on films like Akira and admit the truth.

I started getting into anime just last year, through Studio Ghibli, and have since then seen a number of the animes already mentioned. I think Akira is a tad overrated, I found it a little too disturbing and strange, but that's me.

'Mind Game' is a fantastic film, and easily the single most mind-bending and bizarre movie I have ever seen.

'Tekkonkinkreet' is great, with a very nice setting and fabulous background art. It shares a similar character design with 'Mind Game'.

Another great anime is 'Night on the Galactic Railroad', which I saw just a week ago, and it still lingers in my head. It's very surreal and some may find it slow, but I loved it!

Also, if you like 'Grave of the Fireflies', I reccommend 'Barefoot Gen', which is even more disturbing. The atomic-bombing of Hiroshima in this film is simply staggering, totally mind-blowing.

For comedy, 'Tokyo Godfathers' is great.

UPDATE TIME!!!

Now and Then, Here and Then: Completely beautiful in every way. Sad, moving, humbling, journey's....everything I look for and love in an Anime. I loved it, all 13 episodes of it.

Millennium Actress: I liked it, I did. But I never really got invested in the character or the story line. I'm not a big fan of love stories.

Metropolis: I liked this one too, but it was a little all over the place. Tima was very cute, and I loved the bittersweet ending.

Paprika: Not NEARLY as confusing as I was expecting, it actually kinda made sense to me. I enjoyed it a lot and the idea about dreams was very interesting. But like Millennium Actress, I never really got invested with the characters. Maybe it's the runtime, but Only Yesterday is about the same length and I LOVE Taeko.

Next on the Chopping Block:
- Perfect Blue
- Ghost in a Shell (1 + 2)
- Tokyo Godfathers
- Cowboy Bebop
- JinRoh

Takahata is a very character-oriented director; Satoshi Kon is all about style. That's why you get so much more attached to Taeko than any of Kon's protagonists.

You're not a big fan of love stories, but isn't Only Yesterday sort of a love story . . . ?

On the surface, maybe. But to me the love element is just that, an element of the story. It's certainly welcome, as I have nothing against love stories, it's just they don't interest me that much, if that's what a story is purely based on. I see Only Yesterday as all about the personal journey through Taeko's life, particularly her childhood. There is so much more I could say (and I will one day) but I'll stop rambling now...

I'm just going to list series those new to anime can watch online legally-for free.

On Hulu- you can see episodes of Mushi Shi and Death Note. On Funimations site you can watch "Ghost Hunt " , "Ouran High School Host Club" and"The Beast King"

And on Crunchyroll You can watch "Natsume Yuugin Chou", "Last Exile" and "Time of Eden"

I think Anime News Network links to all those titles now as well

(My faves: Last Exile, Natsume Yuugin Chou, Ghost Hunt and Ouran)

I just saw Ghost in the Shell.
Wow.

For a non-anime person, it was really really good.

Last Exile is a very quality series, I really like Range Murata artwork.

Another good movie is A Tree of Palme, based on the story of Pinocchio, it's a very well done anime, extremely good artwork. Interestingly, it is all cell animation, no cg. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclop...nime.php?id=928

I have seen a lot of series and quite a few movies. I the series I own listed online, I'll do the movies later sometime. Here's the list. http://www.gurulib.com/oldwrench

I would recommend most of them I have there. Haibane Renmei is a favorite of mine, it's by ABe.

Beck is an interesting one. Gunslinger Girl, a premise so sick and wrong, but such a great story. Kaleido Star, circus fun and adventure, an uplifting story. Full Metal Panic, giant robots, hot school girls, humor, adventure, drama, what more could you ask? Fumoffu is just straight out laughs. Kino's journey, great stories. L/R, licenced by royalty, secret agent style, very good.

Better stop for now, I have a few more pages there to go. If you see any you'd like to know about, let me know, I'll try to tell you about them.
