Help me pick a good film!Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by Dave_Maz Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Hi everyone!

Here's my story.
I became extremely captivated with Princess Mononoke when I saw it and searched for more of Miyazaki/Ghibli films. The next one I saw was spirited away, which I loved even more. There is a certain element to both of these films that just makes them so enchanting and amazing. The animation and the characters and dialogue and everything just work together so great!

Well...I decided to buy more of Miyazaki/Ghibli films because I was conviced that they would all be as wonderful as those first two I watched. So I bought Nausacaa and the Valley of the Wind, and I was pretty dissapointed with it overall. The movie just seemed to lack that element that I fell in love with from Mononoke and Spirited away. It was something about the animation and how stuff just didn't seem to flow like those other two.

So here's my problem. I'd like to buy more Ghibli films, but I don't want to keep being dissapointed. From someone who has seen them all, are there any other films that even come close to the magic that Mononoke and Spirited Away have? Please let me know.

Many, Many Thanks!!
Dave

porco rosso and cat returns and my neighbor totoro are the first three that pop to mind. youd probably like cat returns the best and totoro.

most works are wonderful in the writer character of Mitazaki.
but, there is a problem that should be considered.
he takes three years to complete one movie.
therefore, it is likely to compare unfavorably technically...
compared with a recent movie.

Totoro, Porco Rosso and Laputa, i recommend.
if you like Spirited away, you might like Kiki's Delivery Service.

It is true that Nausicaa has quite backward animation quality, after all it is over 20 years old.

I think you will enjoy Howl's Moving Castle if you focus on the animation a lot. It is filled with stunning visual effects and beautiful scenes that can leave your mouth wide opened.

If you like the story of personal struggle of growth and personal development, you may like Kiki's Delivery Service. Though it was made back in 1989, the visuals are way better than Nausicaa, and I regard it as one of the most beautiful hand-made animation. (Strictly speaking, Spirited Away is a CG film )

I've seen and own a large amount of Ghibli films, especially the ones that Hiyazaki has had a hand in. Some of the better ones to watch include:

Laputa: Castle In The Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (A Pre-Ghibli Production)

Nausicaa seems to be the popular vote for the best ghibli film for old ghibli fans (old as in those who have grown up with ghibli for a long time).

I pretty much agree that Mononoke and SA has the most magic in all of ghibli's movies, but not necessarily the best movies.

On selection, pretty much depends on your taste. If you like fantasy, maybe Laputa and Howl might suit your needs.

Nausicaa was pretty good in my eyes, for the record.

Thanks for the comments everyone! More are definitely welcome. I'm going to try Laputa and maybe the Cat movies.

Have a great day!

You've got to buy Laputa. It's animation isn't as slick- being another of Miyazaki's older films- but the story and characters are wonderful. I've got a couple friends hooked on Miyazaki films by showing them Laputa first, so I think it's a good film for someone who isn't yet deep into the director's work.

My first two Ghibli films were Spirited Away and Mononoke as well. Spirited Away remains my personal favorite. I thouroughly enjoyed Nausicaa, despite the unpolished animation, but well. I recommend pretty much every Ghibli film I've seen that you haven't yet- Porco Rosso, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa.
