Hey everyone! I recently learned of a project in the works through an article on Anime News Network. It's a movie about a boy's life in the prisoner camps of North Korea by the biographic novel company Emotional Content.

The company making this film is known for publishing biographical manga about human rights issues following the lives of people like Che Guevara, MLK, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Anne Frank, Ab Lincoln, etc. Their recent release of an illustrated take on the 14th Dalai Lama's life has also received media attention and praise. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/23...?iref=allsearch EC has published these titles in 10 languages and distributes them in over 20 countries.
With the animated feature "NORTH", they are hoping to create more awareness of events surrounding North Korean prison camps and hopefully inspire positive actions for the future.

"In the repatriation program in the 60's, more than 93,000 Japanese Koreans left Japan to head to North Korea, which was promised by North Korea leaders to be "Heaven on Earth." The main character's family was one of the families who took the voyage to this "Heaven on Earth", to dedicate their lives and wealth for the construction of what was meant to be the greatest nation, and that would promote communist idealism.
Relatively peaceful days in Pyongyang enjoyed by the family abruptly ended with the disappearance of the grandfather, and the main character's forced transfer to Yudok concentration camp. Seems as though the creators are doing their best to make this as authentic as possible by interviewing survivors, researching maps, forms of harsh labor, punishment and so on.
I am very happy to see people out there combining their love for art with their love to help others whether that be through education, inspiration, or simply identifying with somebody in a particular place and time.
