Has anyone here seen The Adventures of Hols, Prince of the Sun? If so, what are your thoughts? I haven't seen it yet, but plan to do so very soon. I wonder how it fares in comparison to Takahata's (and Miyazaki's) later films, and its quality in general.

Sorry that I haven't seen it yet so I cannot comment on it. But as far as I know, the Japanese DVD release of the movie has no subtitles.

That movie sounds interesting. I hope they release it here someday (key word: someday)

Ah its a pretty good movie, certainly a turning-point in Takahata's career.

It grossed so little that he was demoted and never allowed to direct again...if not for this movie, he may never have helped found Ghibli O.o.

Don't let the terrible box office statistics put you off though, critically acclaimed, but unappealing to the consumers of the time -its a must for Takahata fans. The same goes to Miyazaki fans since he greatly contributed to the making of this movie and his influence is easily recognisable.

I have uploaded the subtitles I made for it. Unlike others around, and without sounding arrogant, mine are very accurate. This isn't because of any translation skills I have, but because they are taken from the official screenings of the 1980s. I have copied it word to word and resynced them for muxing with a HQ version (a very tedious process).

I'm not sure this is allowed since Optimum have recently released the dvd with english subs (after I had completed mine of course). Still, this should be made available to those who do not have access.

Find good use for them

Thank you so much for taking your time to do such a time-consuming work. You surely are a devoted fan . Anyway I will definitely make good use of your subs . By the way I wonder how did you locate the source of the 1980 screening?

No problem , oh and I was a little sleepy when I wrote that message. What I should have said is that the subtitles are based on the original TV premiere, which was shown in the US many years ago under the title of 'Little Norse Prince'.

My friend lent me his VHS. It was horrible quality and I thought it deserved better. A couple of weeks after having completed the subtitles, Optimum announced plans to release a R2 copy with English subs. So it was kinda pointless I guess, but still a nice side-project.

If there are no objections and enough interest, I guess I can torrent the digitally restored movie I synced the subs for?
