Hey guys. As I'm sure you already know but Japan was hit by a massive quake (8.9 on the scale) and was followed by a huge tsunami.
There are many organizations that are taking donations to help Japan recover.
I donated to crunchyroll's program mainly because I'm always hanging around crunchyroll watching anime.

Good news, ghibli museum is largely unaffected, it seems. My newpaper has a report of a family heading t the museum when the earthquake happened; luckily, there wasn't much destruction.

The problem with things like this, tsunamis tornadoes wars etc is they are dramatised by the media to strike fear into your heart.
They usually make it out to be totaly worse than it actually is.

Ive been keeping myself updated with the events of friday constantly. I think its amazing and terrible.
I can't honestly believe the amount of destruction and sympathise so much with the Japanese. My colleagues daughter is in Sendai, luckily she's fine.
Good luck to Japan, this is going to be one heck of a clearup, Honestly want to come over and help!!!

Actually, it IS as bad as it is. The pictures you see in the media were taken from Sendai and the region around it. As you can obviously tell, the city looks almost unsavalgable.
I kinda wish I could fly over and help them. Seriously.

That's about five times as bad as the media makes it out to be here in Norway. Everything is gone.

I admit that some stations sensationalize the news *cough*CNN*cough*, but the sensationalism, in this case, isn't with regards to the scale of devastation. Like Roar said, you just have to look at the pictures.

So glad to hear, I was already wondering about that, really. But the damage that was done by the tsunami and all the people who are wounded or even died, it's so sad, there is so much damage and destruction I feel so sad about this, I hope everyone who is able to, will help Japan.

I've been watching the coverage in complete disbelief. It isn't at all overblown. I think it would be very hard for even the sleaziest tabloid to exaggerate the tragedy, because in my opinion, there do not exist words to even describe it adequately.
The earthquake alone - thought to be at least 9.0 now - would be enough of a disaster to shock most countries. The tsunami alone... like Hurricane Katrina, at least. And a nuclear emergency as well?
One thing I can say is that, if something terrible like this was fated to happen, Japan is without a doubt one of the best-prepared countries in the world for it to happen to. In some cases, natural disasters like these are made much worse by negligence and unpreparedness... but I would say that in this case almost every reasonable precaution has been taken.
When the earthquake in Sichuan struck in 2008 and destroyed many schools, it was negligence; when the levees failed in New Orleans, it was negligence... In Japan's case, after the crisis is over there will certainly be an inquiry into why the reactors all failed, and perhaps negligent planning can be blamed for that as well.
But the nuclear issue, although scary, is for now a very small problem compared to the damage done by the earthquake and the tsunami. What frightens me is that, against those, Japan took every reasonable precaution that could be taken, and all of them paid off, and yet the death toll is still immense. There is no way that any fraction of the damage can be attributed to negligence, lack of preparation, or bad planning.
So it makes me feel very small and powerless. There is really nothing more that could have been done... And yet still...
Please don't read the following paragraph, if you are like me and thinking about other peoples' suffering makes you very sad.
When footage from the tsunami reached here, I saw something that really shook me, and even now thinking about it, I start to shiver and cry. The helicopter footage showed cars driving away from the advancing wave. You had to look very closely to see it. Although the water moved tremendously fast, from so high up it almost appeared to be creeping forward in slow motion. Each car was going in different directions, turning around - I could feel, from the way the cars moved, the panic that the drivers must have felt. Some of the cars took the right roads and may have gotten away. Others weren't fast enough. Others still took a wrong turn, and the road they chose was quickly surrounded by water. I could tell that the drivers were afraid, because many turned and drove right off the road before the wave hit. In photographs, it's not obvious that there are people, because all the cars look like they're parked. I wonder if the camera people even knew that they were filming moving cars with people on them. They probably just thought they were filming the wave. I don't think it's common for news agencies to show live footage of people dying on television.
And then I look at the pictures - and it's clear that this same terrifying process must have played out thousands of times.
It's just unbelivable.

I totally agree that the devastation over there is horrendous and I wish that I was young and healthy enough to be able to go over there and help in any way that i could. Unfortunately, that is not possible, so all i can do is donate to the Red Cross and hope for the best. As Mushka said, Japan is one country that has at least tried to be prepared for something like this.
Earlier, when I stated my frustration with the media services, it wasn't for the ongoing, current coverage on the damage, etc, but for areas like in Southern Calif, the media was playing it up that we might get inundated ourselves with lots of danger and damage. When it actually happened, all it amounted to was a foot or two of wave action, if that. They hyped it up to make sales, etc and /that is what I think is wrong. Yes if there is a danger, warn about it, but be realistic!!!!

A little bit of a personal note. My wife's mother grew up in Yuriage (shown in two of the before/after pictures) and her brothers and sisters remained there. Of the four households, she has been able to contact only one.
Yesterday, we learned that one member of the three families was confirmed dead and that all of the others are missing. We're still hoping for some good news, but the hope is fading.

I appreciate the sentiment. The "after" pictures of Yuriage are heart-breaking. I had been there many times before, most recently about a year ago. It was the epitome of small-town Japan. The people were unhurried, friendly, not really into technology, and spoke with an extremely thick northeastern accent. The image that nails my wife's Yuriage relatives are the people Taeko visits in "Only Yesterday."
