The Kindle Putting Bookstores Out of BusinessPost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

This is probably old news for some, but it's new to me. I've never really cared for anything relating to the Kindle or iPad, but I recently went to a small bookstore near where I live, only to find out from the owner that they are going out of business. There's even a huge Borders store closing down. Why? They tell me it is because of the Kindle.

What are your thoughts on this? I love books, and can't stand reading a screen. To be fair, I highly doubt that the Kindle will make books obsolete; that's ludicrous. But this still really....sucks. My two favorite bookstores near me gone forever because of a stupid Kindle? What is the world coming to?

It's putting stores out of business? D:

We have eReaders here, and I own one, but most of us still go out and buy actual books. I like my eReader, but I often get easily distracted by it.

I have to believe that your information is wrong, zachary... I don't believe that eBooks are the reason for the bookstore and Borders going out of business. There are just too many of us readers that like to sit up with a BOOK and not some electronic thingy. Just like when audio books first came out, yeah, I listened to some of them, but only because I was driving a delivery truck at night and it helped pass the time. Funny thing was, the audios that I listened to were ones that I had read as a book and enjoyed.

There has to be other reasons than just the eBooks for those businesses to be affected. They might make a dent, but I don't see it as being that bad...

Loads of bookshops including the big chains have been closing down everywhere. Especially Borders, most of the borders shops have closed down - the one in my city hasn't however.

I don't actually think it is because of ebooks, like ebooks probably will take over one day like books took over scrolls. ebooks can carry multiple books in one electronic device and you don't need to produce paper and stuff. But i love real books more, i stare at a screen too much already.
But anyway, what i've hear is it's mainly online book stores (which sell for a much smaller price compared to normal books stores) which are making book shops go out of buisness.

I'm not too bothered about it. I've used a Kindle and they're great, really great. Personally I'd prefer one to a book.

As Husky says, it won't be the sole reason anyhow. Business will be bad right now anyway. A lot of business are closing down, not just bookstores.

I still prefer real books, but I have nothing against the Kindle and other ebooks. It is extremely popular, so I believe that it's definitely part of why bookshops are suffering, but there are many reasons. My main concern about this is that with fewer bookshops it might make physical books harder to get, and that could then make the situation even worse for shops.

Will ebooks replace real books? Perhaps. I don't think it'll happen in our generation, and probably not the next either. If it does happen, it'll be a long time from now, when physical books have truly become obsolete.

Bookstores flourished in the past because people actually read.

Kids now are seen with psp or iphones instead.

I so badly want to pick up a book and read it through to the end. But I haven't done that for at least half a year.

I'm not opposed to e-books and the kindle, although I've yet to read anything on one. But I don't like the restrictiveness with which publishers are handling digital formats. I don't want to rent or license books. I want to borrow, own, re-read, and share them.

This is why I don't like e-books. They kind of take away a bit of the experience.

It's sad because I put hold on some books at the library...and then they came in and I didn't even have time to pick them up.
