For Barry Trotter, I have not yet finished the book so cannot comment on it. But you can check some sample pages here :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/07432442...5054#readerpage

The reviews of the book in the amazon page are not that positive, btw.

The fantastical stories of Harry Potter and his friends seem to fit just right into the magical world of Miyazaki. Well, it may turn out to be a Laputa-esque adventure of the trio in a Howl-like world. But I wonder if the focus would shift to Hermione, as Miyazaki has a preference towards the female characters?

Miyazaki would have no patience for the simple melodrama and the black-and-white worldview present in Harry Potter. Anyway, if he ever set to adapt it and changed these things, he'd be "killed"----Harry Potter fans would murder him.

Hehe that's why I said it would be a Laputa-esque adventure: with slapstick adventures and someone like Muska as the born-to-be head of villains.

Well, if I were a serious Potter fan, I would have already murdered the directors of the current Potter movies . In fact two hours are never enough for any Potter book. If someone has to be the butcher, I would love to see an expert of storytelling like Miyazaki to hold the knife, rather than the present staff that has made the previous movies totally incomprehensible and boring.

P.S. all these are light-hearted chats indeed and don't take it seriously. Either Miyazaki or Rowling with a right mind would never give a nod to the project.

Aye the movies of Harry Potter are rubbish and do not do the book justice. In the third they cut huge parts out and left out lots of relevant information for the next books...i wont say as i dont want 2 ruin it for anyone if you havnt read them yet.

Im surprised that Miyazaki decided to base a film on a book..his imagination is so...fantastic that it would be predicted that he would change alot and make it very different from the book, which might make people unhappy.....hes come up with amazing stories of his own....

love and hugs

Suddenly the topic changed into Harry Potter
Sorry for making it up

btw Harry Potter is also a great hit in my country... the book already gained many fans... however, eventho we use the same set of alphabet with England and many of our vocabs are from English.... there's only a few people prefer to read the original English one... and all of those people are mostly big fans!

FYI I haven't read even one of Ms. Rowling books! But my sister is a big fan of her and Harry Potter seems to be one of her big favourite... She often tell me the stories... and eventho it's very interesting and very creative to me.... technically I easily get bore to read a 500 pages exceed novel that only consist of 26 alphabets, 10 numbers, and some signs....
Sorry....

And since I haven't read the book... I dont have any opinion about the movie.... yet technically (by its digital effects), the movie is splendid... I like Hermione as visualized in the movie ..... but like Jiji said, the story representated in the movie was too short and too narrow than the original book... it's a pity...

Well, you should seriously consider learning Chinese then . I can safely assume that there are at least 5000 different characters in the translation of any of the Potter books. Some masterpieces of literature may even have up to 15000 characters. Pretty impressive, huh ?

Yet the surprsing but also amazing part of Chinese is that once you have mastered the language, you do not need a dictionary (unlike English or other phonetic-based languages, as you cannot tell the meaning of the unfamiliar words). In fact I have never touched my Chinese dictionary ever since I was 10 . Without the hassle of the grammar stuff, a 12-year-old can write in Chinese as good as a 21-year-old or a 60-year-old.

That's why I prefer to learn Japanese first hehehe
My father is from 広州 (Guangzhou) and he still good at recognizing n understanding Kanji... well all his brothers and sisters are still good too.... but it's not inheritance into me (T~T) and all my friends...
it's not a mainstream here since there was a chinese banning for 32 years (1960s-1990s).. so not many chinese children in my generation learned chinese.... but now it's a popular third language in Indonesia
How about you teach me some?

But unfortunately, my environment don't support it... we don't use Mandarin or even Cantonese in our daily language even for family...

all I can understand is only the very basic of vocab such as "明天 (Ming Dien), 昨天 (Cuo Dien), 天空 (Dien Gong), 對不對 (Duei Bu Duei), and so on"
btw we said Mandarin as "国言 (Guo Yi)" and Cantonese as "Gong Hu" (dont know the character....)
Perhaps I already 12 years late for learning Chinese.....

oh and how you can understand a Kanji that you dont know the meaning? by similarities?

and just my curiousity.. if a beijing person talk to you, can you understand just by hearing? or everybody in HK able to understand standar Chinese?

Oh I have left out my reply to Lily in my previous message... (^_^;; )

I think you imply Howl when you said Miyazaki "decided to base a film on a book." But actually Kiki's Delivery Serivce is also a loose adaptation of a novel of the same title. Just like Howl, the movie of Kiki is drastically different from the book, to the extent that Eiko Kadono the original author was furious with Miyazaki (while DY Jones was happy with the Howl movie). Back in the 70s Miyazaki tried to make an anime adaptation of Pippi Longstockings and went to Sweden to negotiate with the original author. The author declined Miyazaki's offer, leaving Miyazaki utterly disappointed (the stuff he had in his mind and got from the Sweden trip were later used to produce Kiki). I have to say it was a wise choice to make, as the Miyazaki adaptations tend to provoke the author (Kiki) or disappoint the audience (Howl).

On a personal level, I like the Kiki movie much more than the book, which is even slower and more episodic than the movie. I find the movie Kiki more lovable, being a polite and kind-hearted little girl, while the original one is sometimes a bit tomboy-ish, annoying (or even slightly evil in a certain case ^_^;; ). As for Howl, the book is more coherent and intriguing than the movie, but you can never enjoy all those eye candies if you decide to read the book only (not even through your imagination: Miyazaki's world is beyond words).

And Funbert (maybe it is cooler to call you FvZ 8], the initials of your name), I have heard about the banning of the Chinese language and customs in Indonesia and am not very happy about it. Glad that they have put an end to this ridiculous and reactionary policy. Anyway nothing is late for a willing heart and a diligent mind. Maybe you can consider taking elective courses of the language in the university? Or if there isn't any, you may consider taking the courses run by private institutions. I am far from being good at teaching, so don't count on me to learn the whole language . (but I can teach you some words in Cantonese and written Chinese if you are interested )

I have never heard of 国言 or Gong Hu. Generally the Beijing dialect (Mandarin) is called as 普通話 (Putonghua) in China or 國語(Guo yu) in Taiwan. While the Guangzhou dialect (Cantonese) may be referred as 廣東話, 廣州話 or 廣府話 (Guang Fu Hua, probably "Gong Hu" means this one).

It is very rare to come across characters that you don't know once you have built up a solid foundation of the language. There are about 5000 characters that are commonly used, and all new words are built up with this set of characters, instead of creating new characters for them. New words are made to be very obvious with their meanings, even if they are foreign words. Say, the word "computer" has translations all over the word based on the English pronunciation. But in Chinese, it is called 計算機 (calculation machine) or 電腦 (electrical brain). Therefore it is not much a hassle to learn new words, and people would seldom dish out money for dictionaries. Undoubtedly there are tonnes of characters that no one knows (the language has a history of thousands of years after all). But only those researchers who work on ancient art and literature would bother with them .

Even dialects within a single province can be so different to the extent that they are mutually incommunicable (old people in the parks chats in Hakka, while my classmates often use the Chaozhou dialect for teasing and cursing ). Therefore you can expect that the Beijing people and the Hongkongers have difficulties in understanding each other. There are compulsory Putonghua lessons in my school ever since grade 2. Unfortunately I have little interest in the Beijing dialect . It turns out that my English may even be better than my Putonghua.

P.S. since this thread is random chit-chat except the first few messages **hides **, maybe it should be moved to "General Discussions?"

I found Howl in Indonesia, but sadly it's a pirated one and having a very low picture quality (handycam on teather)....
So I haven't watched Howl... but I deeply want to... I have a feeling that this movie somehow like Laputa which taken from Gulliver.

FvZ is not bad about the chinese courses... I have a plan to take it... there's many here already.. but I'm afraid it will make me confuse since Nihongo uses same or similar Kanji with similar pronunciation and similar meaning which can make me deeply confused... well I think I'll learn from my dad or my friend first.... b4 getting into an academic language learning... FYI I already able to read some Kanji in Mandarin (so I can fairly sing and understand a song when I watched a video-clip)... but I just able to read and don't able to understand 100% what it's mean..... so I can't feel the emotion in the song....

Sorry... I mistaken with "Gengo" in Japanese.... we said
"Guo Yu" but because of local accent it's become "Guo Yi".... many chinese pronunciation used in here... Beijing, Hongkong, Guang Fu, and Taiwan.... we use "Kam Xia" to relative... and "Xie Xie" to elder person... (of course for Chung-Hwa-Ren only)

It's dull but it's good... I dont like to write imported word in Katakana since visually it's dont have any spirit... Kanji is much better...

Hehe I would definitely love to enter such a school if there was really one (^_^)! Well, my English is very poor indeed. I got only a "C" in the recent public exam... (T_T)

It's a good idea to learn the basic stuff from your father first, since he seems to be a native-speaker . As for the confusion between the two languages, I think if you have already built a very solid foundation of Japanese, it is not quite easy for it to be shaken with learning another language. And in fact you are in an advantage for having a basic knowledge of the Chinese characters. Learning everything from scratch is much more difficult, I have to say.

Yup yup. That's exactly the point. I love Katakana for it is so easy to learn as a majority of its vocabulary are merely "Japanized" English words. But at the same time I despise it for its lack of strength and spirit, and its incongruity to the Japanese aesthetics in general. Somehow I feel that the imported words in katakana are like aliens from another dimension disguising themselves as humans in a funny way.

Thanks for compiling such a detailed list! A pity that I have yet to see at least 1/3 of all the titles . Anyway have you guys read any of those original works? For me, I have only read:

Treasure Island (have not seen the TV series yet)

Sherlock Holmes (have not seen the TV series yet)

The Nausicaa manga

Kiki's Delivery Service

Howl's Moving Castle
Oh I have heard about the blasts in London. It is absolutely terrible . Hope that no one around here is injured. And maybe Lily is busy spreading her love around.

Hehe I only have book 1 and I read the remaining ones in the library. I am now thinking whether to buy one or wait for the library to have them in stock.

Glad to know that you are in good shape ! I am sure your relatives are also alright!

I have gotten the book yesterday. But the ridiculous part os that the local newspaper printed all the spoilers and various details of the new book on a full size page in the international section. The worldwide craze for getting the book may be some sort of international news, but the spoilers are certainly not (<_< ). Heh, the page has killed most of my excitement and anticipation, and I still have yet to read the book.

I am gonna start reading HBP after I have finished rereading the Nausicaa manga (at book 7 now!)
