We are now going through a "Ponyo" phase with my daughter, so now we have watched it about three times (small change compared to the likes of Laputa or Kiki).
However I have to say this is probably my LEAST favourite HM's movie.
Not only do I find it a bit of a snooze, but the plot seems rather flimsy (who/what is Fujimoto? And what about the sea-goddess? How on earth did they mate?? Why are the sea goddess and Fujimoto calling Brunhilde Ponyo? And so on...)
Some of the scenes, especially during the storm are very good indeed, but as a whole I have not managed to warm up to the characters; in fact I found Ponyo it/herself a bit unnerving...
Perhaps it is because I have watched it dubbed (alas, I don't have the original version at hand), but I don't think so as the voices are not so bad (after you get over the first few sentences, that is).
Anyway, am I alone in this?

its a uniquely Miyazaki film, one only he could make and its uniqueness places it beyond being easily critiqued.[About Porco Rosso] taken from a quote of Saddletank and Orphic Okapi

Forgot to say that I DO like Totoro, so the problem (for me) isn't in the kiddie genre per se.

All i can say about it is that, overall, I liked it. True, I saw my first version of it subbed and later bought a dubbed version for the grandkiddies, although they didn't seem to care one way or another. They'd come over and say "Can we watch Ponyo" or "...Totoro". Japanese or English, didn't seem to matter...
I would say that there is no problem in not liking a particular Ghibli. Afterall, we are all different people, though WHY, WHY, WHY everyone doesn't care for WotH is beyond me... The thing is some of us like one thing and some another, but we ALL care for Ghibli in general... Not every film a studio makes makes it to the big time...

Yes indeed, Husky51. However I have read many a gushing review on this film and perhaps the build up has been to much.
In any case, I have read a short write up you posted on this board a couple of years ago and you seemed more than satisfied (at least at the time )

Ponyo is not a good movie.
Well, opinions are subjective anyway, and you can't really expect much from an incredibly loose adaptation of The Little Mermaid. That's said though, I think it's aimed more towards the really small kids than people like us, so it's understandable if many people feel shortchanged.

It kicks Disney's The Little Mermaid in the ass, though.
I must say Ponyo is probably not my favorite, but I still think it's on the same level of the other films, and my god...
The opening...

Well, now I have Tales from the Earthsea waiting for me... I have read here that people don't think much of it, so I won't keep my expectations high... let's see how it fares with Ponyo

Ponyo and Howl's moving castle are definitly my least favourite Miyazaki movies. Ponyo is nowwhere near as good as his late 80's small kids movies (Totoro and Kiki) Regarding your questions. Fujimoto, I believe, used to be a man. He then fell in love with the sea-godess and turned his back to manhood. The sea-godess is literally the godess of the sea. I would assume that Ponyo and her sisters were concieved in Fujimoto's underwater laboratory. Brunhilde is the name Fujimoto gave to Ponyo. When she is captured back she tells Fujimoto that she wants to be called Ponyo.

Ponyo is actually one of my favourites, and i like it more than Totoro. Its my go to happy film of the ghiblis.
I don't like Howl's that much, its nice, i like it, but its one of my least favourites and a lot of people to seem to love it.

My go to happy film of the ghiblis is definitly Totoro. Can I ask you why you don't like Howl's moving castle, since almost everyone here except me seems to love it? My biggest problem with it is that the story is just too muddled and complicated.

I like Howl's a lot, it is a good film, i just don't like it as much as a lot of other ghibli movies.
