Interview with Miyazaki about Arrietty
Hello everybody!
There is an interesting interview about Japanese culture on JP and UK Blu-rays of Arrietty. It's mostly about Yonebayashi and other animators on Studio Ghibli and also about the decay of Japanese culture. There is an English translation on UK Blu-ray. There is one strange place in it about some kind of "sweet-sellers with dolls" on 21:21.07. Maybe there is some kind of mistranslation or misunderstanding here but I just can't understand what is he talking about.
Here is the line in full:
It's always the same for the bearers of commercial culture,
from picture-card storytellers to sweet-sellers with dolls.

Without having read the transcripts, I'd assume "sweet sellers with dolls" is a broad term for everyone who tries to use Studio Ghibli for commercial purposes. Studio ghibli is notoriously strict about it's trademark and use very little merchandising in comparison to Disney/Pixar etc. So sweet sellers with dolls is anyone who tries to use the Ghibli brand to sell products.

Interesting opinion. Thank you. But I think Miyazaki is talking not only about this. Here follows the quotation from the interview:
0281 00:20:59:11 00:21:05:04 All the talk of nurturing talent or the Animation Hall of Fame is laughable.
0282 00:21:06:16 00:21:12:19 Even if the government helps to train them,
0283 00:21:12:22 00:21:15:01 there may not even be an audience.
0284 00:21:16:04 00:21:18:23 I think that's probably the end of it all.
0285 00:21:21:01 00:21:25:18 It's always the same for the bearers of commercial culture,
0286 00:21:25:21 00:21:30:04 from picture-card storytellers to sweet-sellers with dolls.
0287 00:21:30:07 00:21:34:04 The issue has been the same for everyone,
0288 00:21:34:07 00:21:36:20 who worked in that culture.
0289 00:21:37:23 00:21:39:21 They won't become rich.
0290 00:21:42:17 00:21:47:17 The copyright system is designed
0291 00:21:47:20 00:21:51:09 to make only a some of the people rich.
0292 00:21:51:19 00:21:53:13 It's no good.
