Tavern don't have an app neither it has any notification system. So it takes effort to do so.

Yes, I suppose so. I am not a person who uses a phone to acccess the internet. I have always been quite happy doing so via my desktop computer so I guess if you're a phone user that has its drawbacks.

As I suggested above, the age of web forums is coming to a close, particularly those that are not being updated to use an app.

This forum is home-made though so I assume it uses a standard software set made by a third party - could our admins investigate if an app is available to run the forum software?

This is a very old forum software. and the parent company does not have anything to offer. However it is possible to make an app. By reusing the existing code and converting it to an api. As the functionality is very limited it is not that difficult. However i dont think anyone is interested except me. Also UO has to give access to data to whoever decides to work on it. Which i suppose he would not want to do.

However there is another way, that is fetching the whole web page as is and converting to a view that is mobile friendly. This is a bit more involved and difficult. And i dont see the demand for it.

It is not as nice as json, but it's not THAT difficult. If you have access to the dom, you can use document.querySelectorAll + element.textContent to get whatever you want in a couple of lines. Even if you have raw string, it is still not that difficult, if you know regex-fu. For example, running this
document.body.innerHTML.match(/goup\\.gif[\\s\\S]*?sans-serif">[\\s\\S]*?__________________/g)
in this page console will give you an array with post contents (you still have to remove markup trash).

People don't want to see text on their mobile App. They want nice UI with all the good stuff that comes with Apps. Also do that in a Dynamic way. Also do that for all the types of content and pages we have. Concept is one thing and practicality is another. Doable? Yes. A lot of work? Also yes. Have better idea? Please explain how you will convert the existing pages into an app. I will help if it's feasible within a hobby project. Wanna give a try?

I am old school and only vaguely understand what you all are talking about and all these acronyms and such and as I am happy with what I have, I'm not really interested in doing an upgrading to being able to converse in the Tavern via cellphone. I am perfectly happy using my laptop.

At least that is what I am understanding this is all about...

If that is what this is all about and others want it, then so be it, go for it.

I am just putting my two cents in and letting others know where I stand... neither for nor against what you seem to be suggesting.

'nuff said, lol...

I think the main issue is just that forums aren't a popular platform anymore. Having a means of easily accessing it by phone is all well and good, but when the Facebook group exists already, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. I think it would be better just to promote the forum on the Facebook group, and basically remind people to come and have a look. Because even if forums aren't popular, I think it has something that other platforms don't - so it's worth encouraging people to use it more.

Agreed.

It was probably a mistake to allow people to join the FB group who were not already members here. It now feels like the FB group is the go-to place for people when originally its intention was just as an emergency back up for communications.

I see that regular members here are posting there instead of here so it all feels a bit odd. It might even be a contributory factor as to why this place has died away in the last couple of years.

Perhaps the FB group admins could direct the people there to come here?

There are many ways. The easiest way would be to load the site into invisible frame and build nicer mobile -friendly UI around it. This way, all the authentication stuff keeps working for free. Here is one way to do that on iOS. You can probably even do the whole app as one web view with cordova/phonegap; and if you are css ninja, you can probably just load the site and drop some custom styles on it.
