I think someone mentioned this in another thread, but people don't generally appreciate art very deeply.
The general populace is, in general, content with being gears in a system, and have simple common tastes. Whether it be because of the desire to fit, lack of exposure or simply peer pressure, few people have tastes different from the norm.
In the context of anime, as many anime fans as there are in the west (and I use this term loosely), their exposure and interest remain limited to more mainstream works, and mainly series, rather than movies. In that sense any works from Studio Ghibli is practically a niche within a niche, and you can understand that there won't be many people who know about them, much less be fans of them.
You also need to realize that Studio Ghibli generally produces a movie only every two years. In that period of time, it's very easy for the avergae viewer to get swept away by something else and forget about Ghibli entirely.

its a uniquely Miyazaki film, one only he could make and its uniqueness places it beyond being easily critiqued.[About Porco Rosso] taken from a quote of Saddletank and Orphic Okapi

I don't think I'd call Ghibli a "niche within a niche". While it's true that a lot of people are uninterested in artistic works, Ghibli films often have a mainstream appeal (it helps that they're usually accessible to people of all ages). So really, I'd say that they're among the big names within a niche. It's not the same as, say, Pokemon, or whatever the latest needlessly long Shonen Jump adaptation might be, but as far as anime goes, Ghibli (or more accurately, Miyazaki) is definitely well-known.
The results of the survey don't really surprise me, since I think people wouldn't be aware of Ghibli unless they're anime fans, or very into film, in which case they might know about the studio's critical success. And well, most people don't fit those descriptions.

I just wanted to know, out of a handful of students at my college, who knew about Studio Ghibli.
I am happy, that one of my best friends is open to watch anime. He has watched Ponyo, Howl's Moving castle, Spirited away and From Up On Poppy hill.
I took him to see Poppy hill along with a few friends and my Girlfriend. He saw the rest on a Film4 marathon.
My Girlfriend has a friend that likes them as well, and my friends Girlfriend likes them. There are people out there, that have heard or watched some Ghibli films but never knew about the studio.
I am getting all my friends into the films slowly, but surely. My girlfriend cried at Arrietty, she absolutely loves the film and has seen a few Ghibli films. I got my mum to watch some films, she liked Ponyo and Howl's Moving castle.
I myself am so so happy that I came across Studio Ghibli films. It wasn't that long ago either, I'd say just over a year ago.
Does anyone want to know how I got into watching Studio Ghibli films ?
