Never expected to see the community still alive with familiar faces

Hey all, been a while since I last logged on. 6 years or so.
A lot has happened in that time, I'm no longer 'wapanese', I have my own place, I study sound production, I'm involved in politics, I'm a different person but I stiiiiiill enjoy Studio Ghibli.

And hello again to you all!

P.S. No idea how I managed to remember my password

Wow, it's not every day somebody returns here after six years! This place isn't as active as it once was, although there have been a few new members in the last little while so it's picked up a bit again. Anyway, welcome back!

I think what happened was, I thought "Hmm.. I wonder what happened to that one Ghibli forum.. I guess I'll check it out"..

*decides to look up old posts*

"Wow, totally didn't expect that!"

Feel quite embarrassed though, as in the space of time I've been away I've sort of matured and developed interests in other things. Quite sad, but it's fun to revel in nostalgia.

Also.. How do you stay dedicated to the forum for so long? Does it not exhaust you?

The people. They are what make me stay. They are amazing, and we have mutually seen each other grow over the years. Its a privilege to be a part of that; this place is like no other forum on the internet.

Oh, and welcome back!

I don't actually post all that much nowadays, maybe just once or twice a day, so it's not exactly a great time/energy investment. And I agree with Saddles, it's about the people who are here. On some other forums I didn't know people so well, so when numbers dwindled on those, I didn't really stick around. But here, even though quite a few old members have disappeared or just don't show up much anymore, there's always a core of people I know and like, and it keeps me coming back to see what they have to say.

Welcome back. Dark Totoro...

You fulfill a theory that I have held for many years, in that a number of 'old' Tavern members do come around now and then even if just to look in and see what the ol' Tav' is up to.

Like Saddles said, we are not as active as we once were, but we have had a few new members who shown promise, lol. Our newest active members are belborges and Lynnie...

In case you didn't read it yet, we just were informed that fenkashi is getting married in February and we are jazzed about that and looking forward to some pics of the bride and groom.

Tell us some of your adventures in life...

???"wapanese"???

I've hung around because I love Ghibli and re-watch them periodically. I have a couple of tattoos on my arms and I get a kick out of it when people I come across recognize them. I get all ages, too. Youngest was about 10, oldest was about 50 so the age span of Ghibli fans is still out there, just quieter (and mostly older, it seems, look at Saddles... )

It has been fun watching so many members grow and interacting and even in some cases offering advice from my advanced years. My own kids are long out of the house and this is a whole new family, well 7 yrs+ now, lol and I love it. One of the things that I have enjoyed is seeing the world through the eyes of al the different nationalities represented in here, we are all different and yet all the same. I've learned a lot for them and I hope that I have been able to pass on some little tidbits of information as well.

I seem to be the oldest active member (in age, 69) and that is why ol' roarkiller hung the title of "the old guy" in my avatar, the rat, lol

Enough for now, again, welcome back and we hope youi can stay around awhile and tell us something of your life...

I've also returned to the forums after an equal length away - six years. Haven't logged on since 2009. Would like to be a regular.

I left for my mission in Argentina from 2010-2012, then returned and went to college, which kept me plenty busy for the next 3.5 years. (I'll be finishing up in December.) That's the short version.

Still a big fan of Ghibli films, though, and this is my favorite fan site, so I thought I'd return and see what's going on.

I too find it amazing how this long this forum has been pushing along. It seems every time I check back here not knowing what to expect, it still has some level of activity moving it forward from the regulars. The internet has really changed so much since the days when I first joined this site (almost 10 years ago!), so there's something very nostalgic and heartening about that. Today's social media landscape is unrecognizable to a decade ago (kind of like how folks in those days used to talk about newsgroups and such). Who would have guessed logging onto an internet account to have conversations would become something everyone did (Facebook, Twitter) rather than a niche of people on forums?

Anyways, it's nice to see familiar faces in this thread!

Being of an older generation (though that isn't the entire reason) I never got into facebook, twitter and such. The whole social networking thing completely passed me by. It seemed so shallow and bland. I am still a forum user and this one plus 2 or 3 others, each of which caters for a specific interest of mine, are where I hang out on the internet.

If I want to talk to my friends I either use e-mail or phone them. I have no interest in bumping into people I moved away from 20 or 30 years ago or strangers who pop up in my face and comment on something I wrote that was intended for my close circle.

I'll be a forum user for as long as forums are around.

I wonder if newsgroups are still there? I used to use them.

I remember Facebook being a new thing right when I was leaving high school. My close friends and I messed around with it but it was more of a toy than anything. The generation in school and university right now uses it like crazy, though, and their routines are filled with these minute interactions with hundreds of people. I don't really know if it's a good or bad thing, it's just different (and something I've had to get used to as it does play some role in networking these days).

There do still seem to be various big active forums which are still thriving, but the smaller niche ones are slowly dying off. One thing I've noticed is that there is a bigger proliferation of "general" sites (such as, "gaming sites", "anime sites" ) which have a massive amount of subforums for individual topics (eg, IMDB with auto-created forums for every single film). But since these general sites have a huge amount of users, these subforums tend to divert activity away from the homegrown niche forums dedicated to that topic. I remember being a member of some forums dedicated entirely to just a single show!

I think you can probably see the effect with the Tavern as well. There is still a small amount of activity occurring on the web around Ghibli, but a lot of it now gravitates towards the IMDB pages, the myanimelist.net forums, and of course, the Facebook groups centered around it.

Or maybe this is all wrong. But interesting to think about

great post theowne

as a third world resident, i can not say i was familiar with bulletin boards/forums for a long time. However i can understand your point of view. One reason might be explosion of knowledge and information in internet. Today we know of most things from internet, so the content providers try take the advantage. People are more reluctant to stick to a specific topic for a long time unless they are motivated for it for other reasons. For example there is particularly no reason to come in tavern as there is no news or anything about ghibli and highly likely never will be. But i/we come here for the people.

People who are inspired from ghibli do it for different motivation, for that i think those places(devianart, myanimelist etc) are better. I think people gather for common interest when that interest fades or changes its highly likely that they will disband. i think its a natural consequence, we are seeing that effect here too.

thanks for your post again
