Spirited Away Cells

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to buy film cells from Spirited Away? Disney used to do this, they'd frame them up and sell single cells from various Disney flicks but I can't find anything like this for Ghibli films.

Hi Boomer! Sorry for the belated welcome. Hope that you will have an enjoyable stay here.

Currently there are two type of cels on sale for Ghibli films: the production cels and the cel replicas.

The production cels are the "real" cels that are used in the production of the movies. Because of the nature of anime production which involves a much higher number of cels than background, an average cel usually doesn't come with backgrounds.

Due to the high popularity of Ghibli, and the age and rarity of these cels, they can be quite expensive. But the major price determinant is still the content. The famous scene of Totoro with the Kusakabe girls at the bus stop can easily cost millions of yen. While a cel with only Osono the bakery lady at one corner can cost as little as 5000 yen.

Note that Ghibli has adopted digital technology in the production of all post-Mononoke films. If you ever come across someone selling you a "Spirited Away Production Cel," you may as well give him a whack for he is selling a counterfeit, or pay no more than $1 provided that the artwork is splendid.

The cel replicas, as shown in the link Nanashi provided, are cels that are produced after the production of the movie and are made to be sold as merchandise. They usually come with a matching background, and costs from 30000 to 50000 yen, depends on the production cost (hand-painted/machine-printed).

Haha I wonder how good it would be if I could actually own a Ghibli production cel. You see, it is exactly like owning a part of favourite movie: it is simply magical. But well I am too broke to be able to afford a cel replica, let alone a production cel...
