The keyword search appears to be broken, and I did not see earthsea thread in 1st 5 pages, so here goes new one.

Last time you people complained about spoilers, but I have no idea how to discuss the movie without spoilers, and I mean, this thing was made 10 years ago, come on.

But ok.

Spoiler!, highlight to read.

The only things that made sort of sense for me were the idea of real names giving you power over things (as an explanation of how does magic work), and the idea that you have to give up normal human life in order to escape death (although I fail to see why it had to ruin the balance of whatever).

All the other stuff in the movie is just questions with no answers.

Why did the boy kill his father?

Why did he take his sword?

What did the dragons have to do with anything?

Why was the girl afraid of jumping if she was the dragon-ess?

Why did the warlock try to lure and kill the wizard before he was immortal?

How the boy expects to live after returning to his land, shoud not he be executed for the crime of that scale?

That's just for starters.

I can't answer all of your other questions, but for your first comment about 'spoilers', etc after 10 years. I use you for an example. You finally saw the movie so it is quite likely that others may not have seen it yet either....

Even with long term fans there are sometimes movies that we haven't seen...

As for me, I feel the same way about the books I read...

fair enough but, continuing using myself for an example, I did not search this forum for 'earthsea' before I watched it.

I agree with all your questions. This is Ghibli's weakest work by far. It is full of paper thin characters and unexplained events. There is a story that Miyazaki got up and left the first screening of the final film part way through, apparently in disgust.

One probably needs to know the books beforehand, then things may make a little more sense but that doesn't excuse the fact they are not clarified in the anime.

I have found over the years that because of the depth that a book or manga can go into with a story over the limited ability of most movies/anime that this is generally true

I agree with the idea, but i like to think about the alternative future possibilities which is possible in a movie. Most big novels leave nothing to imagination.

What? Really? Leaving room for interpretation and like, any ideas about the story beyond what is literally on the screen/page is basically the same as a brief summary of what the story is about? I really don't get what you have against watching something and thinking about it a little.

Anyway, I would say this film is underrated (in that it's not as bad as people make it out to be) but it's still weak by Ghibli's standards. It's also not a very faithful adaptation, but I actually quite enjoyed how various elements from the books were rearranged into something different that suits the feature film format better.

I agree with arren's assessment's about the movie NOT being up to Ghibli's usual standards... Yes, it did NOT follow the storyline of the Le Guin book in many aspects... Did I enjoy the anime, YES I did, but not to the degree that I enjoyed many of Ghibli's other movies...

totally, I mean, you save a hour+ of your time that you can put to good use, e g thinking how could the story unfold between events shown in the trailer, and afterwards. isn't that so cool, you know, to just use your imagination, why spend 2 hours in the theater to be spoon-fed the story while turning your brain off (and you know it's off, because, you know, the man who were right next to you then says "did you notice how X did Y in that scene" and you are like "damn, I totally missed it, I have to watch it again to see what else I missed" ). So yeah, just watch the trailer, and then go to the beach or up the mountain and let your brain paint the picture for you.

that, or accept that the story, where they withhold key information from you, sucks.

It does not take a lot of time makc. Usually 2-5 minutes. Right after i finish a movie/book thats the amount of time that i need to imagine alternatives. You should think the process similar to the digestion of food. After we eat food, we feel full, right? And our digestion also starts. I use my imagination to absorb the knowledge/idea that the film/book wanted to portray in this time. Later if you are more interested you can feel free to research/ or do other things in order to prolong your enjoyment. Ofcourse you could watch another movie or read another book in that time. But i feel that it is better to understand one idea better that knowledge little from all ideas. It is a personal choice.

And a trailer is a concept. That is totally different from a book/movie.

well, you can say I am doing "research" by asking the questions right in the top post of this thread. not getting any answers, though

why, because of the star wars clip? I placed that to show that I am aware of this line of argument and so avoid it, not because that's what I really think of it.

@makc

you are asking questions which are out of the context of the film.

read the book you will understand clearly.

Studio Ghibli is not accustomed to trilogy-duology type film. Earthsea is huge(around 1000 pages total)(there are entire websites dedicated for you to research)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthsea_(universe)

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68041...arthsea_Quartet

Even miyazaki would have been troubled to fit all that into a single movie. The start of the movie is the weakest section thats why there are so many confusions. Your questions are from all these books. I think most here have not read them all.

I did not read the series because of its size, it is in my list of future read.

It is the only one that i hope ghibli redoes

offtopic
@makc
may i know where you are from? ofcourse you can decide not to tell if you are uncomfortable.

You're not trying that hard to avoid it. I mean, I suppose you posted that clip to mock me for making some kind of "black and white" argument, but it did come right after you telling somebody who prefers stories that leave something to the imagination, that they might as well not watch a movie at all. Besides, you seemed to think I was defending the film as great storytelling even though I said in the same post that I think it's weak.

But I have to agree with Saddles. I've actually got the same impression before from looking at other threads.

of course, you're free to suppose but, after I already said why I posted it, what can I say more? nope, I was referring to the same post of mine where I insisted that you either go for trailers or for complete story.
