a script to rank ghibli moviesPost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by makc Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

I was thinking here why is it so hard for me to rank the movies, while I could easily answer if someone asks which movie of specific two I would prefer to watch.

And the answer here is that in order to rank them all you have to answer this question lots of times over and over. This is when I wrote the script to do just that:

clicky-clicky-clickety-click

Its output would be a list sorted by your personal rank. For me it's

quote:
Ponyo
The Wind Rises
The Secret World of Arrietty
When Marnie Was There
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Whisper of the Heart
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
From Up on Poppy Hill
My Neighbour Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Grave of the Fireflies
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Pom Poko
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Ocean Waves
The Cat Returns
Only Yesterday
Tales from Earthsea

Looking at it, it still feels like it's different from what I would end up with doing the list by hand, but machines don't lie. Or do they?

This my list, but I am going to do the script again a little later and see what the difference may be...

I started it twice and came up with two different starts with just the first three choices... ( I had gotten confused by the "prevent this page from creating additional dialogue" and had clicked it by error. When I started again, I noticed that I had started slightly differently from my first try...

Whisper of the Heart
Ocean Waves
Only Yesterday
Spirited Away
When Marnie Was There
From Up on Poppy Hill
My Neighbour Totoro
Grave of the Fireflies
Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service
Ponyo
The Cat Returns
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Porco Rosso
Pom Poko
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Tales from Earthsea
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
The Wind Rises
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
The Secret World of Arrietty

I wonder if a good way to picture these lists would be something like this:

but instead of directions there would be movie titles, and you then you would see better how do different people tastes overlap.

The question then is how to choose movie placement so that the plot would make the most sense...

depends on how browser implements "sort" function, if it always does the comparisons in the same order it means you answered something differently. if it does not, well then there are possibilities.

the whole thing relies heavily on one assumption, that if you prefer movie A to movie B, and movie B to movie C, it's impossible for you to prefer C to A. if this is not true, then this method cannot help you with the ranking.

Unfortunately, I found myself wondering how I would choose between different movies that I maybe was not seeing...

One thinking that I have is to place one movie against al of the others, one by one. And then go to a second movie and do the same thing, a very time consuming procedure..

eedit:
Which, looking at your 'wind rose' diagram, may be just what that is accomplishing. I will try it later...

Another related problem is recommendations. On all the sites I have been so far it is done like this: people who liked X also liked Y. However, this does not work at all.

For example, above "When Marnie Was There" is â„–4 in my list and â„–5 in husky's. So, assuming I only just watched it, the site with husky's data would say, someone who liked Marnie, liked "Only Yesterday" and "Ocean Waves" even more - both titles are at the very bottom of my list.

Thus, ranking the same movie equally is not a solid basis for recommendations, they are still very random. If there is a way to assign movies some 'traits', and from movie rankings make conclusions to what traits did the person like, then it might work... or not, still?

For example, I watched erased and liked it. Someone recommended steins gate on that basis, and I liked it too. The trait they have in common is that the protagonist tries to fix the past. But, while this specific trait works very well in steins gate, it is not important in erased at all (as in: not the reason the series worked well for me).

So.... I'm at loss, where to go from here. I keep watching random anime, but it takes more and more time to find something I enjoy.

Nice tool. My ranking:

quote:
Only Yesterday
Porco Rosso
My Neighbour Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Whisper of the Heart
The Wind Rises
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Pom Poko
Princess Mononoke
When Marnie Was There
Spirited Away
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Ponyo
The Secret World of Arrietty
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
The Cat Returns
Grave of the Fireflies
From Up on Poppy Hill
Tales from Earthsea
Ocean Waves

My top 7 are mostly on point, but I feel the ranking between Howl's and Cat Returns is a bit messy. It's a great starting point 'tho, as I would just do some adjustments.

As for recommendations, I believe it's purely an "organic" process. What exactly did the person like about that work? What general concept or style appeal to them? What artist(s) do they admire the most? Do the works they like have something in common like visual style, staff, plot, genre, etc.? What kind of experience are they willing to have at the moment? What is their personality like and what are their values? Maybe it's possible to nail it down with a somewhat lengthy questionnaire or with an analysis of their MyAnimeList account along with Anime News Network info on the works considered.

I was thinking along these lines, maybe applying some black magic to both people lists, the problem here is that for it work my list needs to be very long, and if my list is very long then I very likely already saw everything important and do not need recomendations. Catch 22.
