What to buy??Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by MexPirate Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Hey there, new here and new to most of the Ghibli stuff - I watched Laputa like a million times when I was a kid, so just bought it cos it was released on 28/02 (UK) - I was also totally blown away by spirited away, so I'm gonna buy some more movies - seen this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STUDIO-GHIBLI-14-M...1QQcmdZViewItem

Does anyone know if this is the most complete collection available (I know this doesn't have the latest film)? I'm stuck with a region 2 dvd player but can always use R1 on my PC - also what other Ghibli stuff is worth watching that isn't included in this collection?

Hiya, welcome

That's a nice Ghibli collection, has all of my favorites on there ( I like some more than ever). I'm not sure about the collections though; i've only bought my movies in single DVDs.

The only movie that isn't on there, that I would recommend, is the latest one, Howl's Moving Castle. It's actually being released in the U.S. (region 1) in about 5 days (can't wait! got mine preordered from Amazon), but i'm not sure about the U.K. though.

It's awesome as well (one of my favorite Ghibli movies).

Yea I have seen Howls moving castle on ebay (think they are imports) and saw it was made in 2004 so not included in the collection I've been looking at - seems to have a laputa feel to it looking at the picture on the box, but I'm assuming it isn't a sequal or even set in the same world? think I will splash out on the box set and grab that one when I have worked my way through - there are cheaper set around that include the same films minus the one released in 2002 (something about a cat?) is it worth paying the extra for this film? cos if not I could get the cheaper set and Howls without blowing the bank balance

Interesting find. At £32 (including p+p), the thirteen dvds' come to a total of under £3 each -a tempting offer indeed.

There are, however, some things you should be aware of. Firstly, I believe that this boxset is a bootleg (probably HK)...if so then the English subtitles might be seriously botched.

As mentioned, Howl's Moving Castle is not included. Also, if you enjoy watching Ghibli movies in dub format, note that Whisper of the Heart has only the Japanese track. The Totoro dub is also most probably the old Fox one (although many say they prefer it to the new Disney dub).

No extras either and no detail on the actual dvd casing

Well, let us know whether you decide to buy it or not.

I was a little sceptical at that price myself but, the seller has a lot of feedback and doesn't seem to have had any complaints about the quality of the DVD's.

I must say though after watching the dubbed laputa (latest UK release) I found the very British sounding sheeta and very american Potzu (however u spell it?) incredibly distracting - I would rather deal with subtitles and keep the feel of the movie.

I generally prefer watching them in subtitles too, but sometimes the dubs can be quite refreshing...especially in Ghibli movies, where the art and actions can be as important, if not more so, than the dialogue itself.

Don't let the Laputa dub put you off them completely, I feel it is by far, the worst Disney have churned out (followed by Kiki's dub). Perhaps I'm just biased because I hate James Van Der Beek so much (God, I hate him soooo much!).

From what I've heard, Whisper of the Heart is supposed to have a very promising dub. Personally, I enjoyed the Porco Rosso, Mononoke and new Lupin III dubs a lot. Also, Patrick Stewart made a surprisingly good Yupa in Nausicaa.

Whoa, whoa, MexPirate. Don't buy that bootleg. Rule of thumb: If the prize is too good to be true, it is ALWAYS a bootleg, especially on Ebay. Here's what you do, and all you guys can thank me later:

Don't buy the individual Disney(legit) Ghibli releases as they come out. I know it's tempting, but here's what you do......WAIT for Disney to come out with their own Complete Ghibli Box Set!!!! Oh, you know they're going to do it, too!! C'mon, here Disney has all of these Ghibli movies that they've released, now the next step is to put them all together and try to get more money out of us fans(hey, it's what I'd do, teehee). But I'm too smart for them. I'm going to buy that box set the day it comes out, and not pay thirty dollars a pop for each individual dvd. It's called delayed gratification, baby! Uh-hu, uh-hu, uh-hu. do a little dance.... doo, doo, doo-do.......bwahahaha, evil genius am I, evil genius!! Ahem.

I am afraid as E_Hakki and many pointed out before, the set in question is a bootleg. At the meantime, there is only one legit kind of Ghibli DVD box set exists in the world, the Hong Kong R3 set released by IVL. (Well contrary to what some anime fans think, HK is not all about poor English or bootlegs...) The limited-edition set comes with a qualification certificate and 13 Ghibli movie DVDs. Brenster has a detailed post about it that you may find useful.

http://onlineghibli.com/tavern/thread.ph...8&boardid=4

I also had an old message on the same box set:
http://onlineghibli.com/tavern/thread.ph...6&boardid=4

Anyway, if you are searching for a nice box set with most of the Ghibli movies included, I sincerely recommend the aforesaid one. It has all the 1984-2002 Ghibli feature movies included, with the exception of Yamada and Grave of the Fireflies. The last two can be easily found on the shelves of your local DVD stores, while the Only Yesterday DVD can be quite a hassle to get.

Alternately, getting the R1 versions one by one from your local stores is another good idea. From what I have heard, the Disney dubs of the Ghibli works were pretty nicely done. You can also save all kinds of import and shipment charges.

Hmm, I hope I didn't offend you Jiji. I for one, don't think HK is all about poor English or bootlegs. Its just that the DVD set in question includes Chinese subtitles so I assumed its from HK, and I've recently heard of a few people that purchased HK Ghibli pirates from eBay and have complained about very poor subtitling.

I havn't purchased said "box-set" but I do own most Ghibli films. Never seen The Ghibli's Ep 2. That's it. Can't find it in North America (unless I buy it on E-Bay). Panda Go Panda is very good, I suggest watching it in Japanese cuz the dubs suck!! Nice collection btw, Hauru no Ugoku Shiro is a must for any collection, big or small.

Contrary to what most people believe, these bootlegs, and especially this particular collection, isnt that bad. If the quality of the subtitles is what worries you, then trust me; for some of the movies, they're better than the ones used by the R3 and R1 DVDs.

Quality-wise, however, may be questionable. The most common defect in the ghibli boxset is usually located in the movies Porco Rosso and Only Yesterday, according to most reviews from people who actually bought it. Personally, I own the VCD boxset and not the DVD version, but I can ascertain for the defect in Only Yesterday.

However, since you already bought it, then meh, this rant is pretty useless, except for what I'm gonna say next.

In ebay, a person's rating is NOT only based on the product the person is selling. In the case of anime, believe it or not, you're better off some times getting a HK bootleg version than the real one (surprisingly).

A rating for a seller in ebay is judged based on the confidence that the item bought will be sent over in time and the item is in excellent condition upon arrival, plus the ratings of OTHER items that person might be selling off. For instance, he could be selling collectibles from Japan which might be mostly authentic, and also be selling a few fake products which are of excellent quality. In this case, his ratings will rise, not fall, even if he is selling bootlegged products.

Sorry for the long rant, but there's my 10c worth of mind.

Btw, if anyone is wondering how I know about the quality of bootlegs from HK: I live in Singapore, and unfortunately, unless you are willing to spend more cash on the local release, HK imports are the only ones available, and any anime collector can tell at a single glance that they're bootlegs.

Don't take my words too seriously . I was just clarifying that even Hong Kong has legit releases, which many anime fans that I encounter regard as a joke. Sometimes I feel very sick about it. Admittedly there are Chinese bootlegs around, and some of them do come from HK. But the mainland Chinese, Taiwanese and SE Asian bootleggers also account for a great portion of the pirated anime market share (and of course they have Chinese subtitles included).

I suppose the "HK=bootleg paradise" misconception may be a result of the fact that HK is a well-established entrepot that handles all kind of goods from the regions listed above. Anyway it may be too much of an assumption and overgeneralization to call all those pirated DVDs "HK bootlegs." "Chinese bootlegs" is a fairer and more accurate term IMO.

As far as I know, all the R3HK releases are as good as the R2 Japanese ones in terms of quality. For the subs, all of the R3HK subs are literal translations except Kiki, while for R2JP both Totoro and Kiki have no literal subtitles. Quite a pity indeed.

A sidenote on bootlegs: some of my accquaintances got pirated Ghibli movies in high quality DVD9-discs from Shenzhen, a Chinese city next to HK (the HK underground-works are dying now and the mainland Chinese ones have taken over since long ago). When I visited them, they showed me some of these bootlegs. I am pretty sure they are made from direct-source-copy of the video+audio streams of the R2JP DVDs, with tweaked subtitles that are quite literal and accurate.

According to someone who goes to Shenzhen every weekend, each bootleg disc costed him only RMB¥2, which is equivalent to US$0.25. So consider yourself being seriously ripped off if you paid more than $2 per disc for whatever reason, or if its quality is sub par.

Anyway, you can only support Miyazaki and the Ghibli production team by purchasing the legit releases. If by any circumstance that your region has no local Ghibli releases, at the same time importing R2JP releases is a mission-impossible, I find it a better idea to support the fansubbers than the bootleggers.
