Really? I thought the Disney-Tokuma Deal was made on the condition that Disney could not edit anything out. Although I did hear about the Howl's Moving Castle premier trimming some of the movie.
Such a shame they did this without any kind of warning...you'd naturally expect the limited edition DVD to have everything the normal one does, but with a couple of extras.
Thanks for the warning and I'm sorry if you purchased the limited edition...perhaps you can still get a refund?

Which limited edition are you talking about? The Japanese or Australian?
If it's the Australian release, bring it up at Madman Entertainment's website forum, they'll be sure to answer your question.
It might just be a glitch on your dvd. If there are scenes cut out, I'm sure Ghibli would have gone skits and it would have been brought up much earlier. Afterall, it premiered in June 2005.

Actually there are English soundtracks and subtitles on the R2 Japanese release of Howl by Buena Vista. I have no information on the condition of the Howl DVDs of other regions, but at least I am sure that the Japanese version have nothing cut.

The contract between Pixar and Ghibli must not include limited additions. As long as they lable it like that and still intend to sell the original version, there really is nothing that Ghibli can do about it. But thank you. I almost bought the limited adition. Those scenes may not be all that important, but they show alot about the character early on in the story. You can still catch it later on, but this way it is more entertaining and it happens at a more convenient time. It also introduces "Turniphead", the missing prince. How Pixar can cut that out and still think that the movie works, even thought Sophie meets him later on and seem to recognize him (doesn't really make sense if they cut out the meeting, the audience would have to make stupid assumptions about the story that seem really farfetched. Like they are childhood friends or something) really boggels my mind.
How is it that those crooks sleep at night?

I don't have the Australian Limited edition, but I'm quite confident that there is NO editing in the english edition.
REMEMBER, the english dub was released by Disney in JUNE 2005!, If there were such cuts (an by your explaination, quite long ones) there would of been an immediate uproar on anime boards across the world. There is NO such mention on of such cuts on any Australian forum, including Madman Entertainment's website.
Also, the majority of the extras occur on the second disc, so I don't see how this could of effected disc space. If there is an alteration/cuts to the ANIMATION, then it should of came up in the subbed version too, as it's only the audio that makes the difference.
I haven't heard of such cuts untill i read this thread. If you believe there is such thing, email Madman Entertainment or bring it up on their board- They are the people responsible for the release and would know more about it than anyone on this messageboard.

If you recall, he said on Limited Additions. With that one word, "limited" Ghibli can't do a thing. With that one word, people wouldn't really care because the original version is un-cut, that it is. I don't really see much of a base for your defending Pixar.

Do you have the limited addition or the original American release of Howl's Moving Castle?

Been following this thread for a while, but still wondering: when you say limited edition, from which country's release are we talking about?
If Disney's release has a cut, then I guess Ghibli can sue them. Otherwise, other companies can do anything they want, since they're not Disney, and so not bound by any Ghibli/Disney contract.
Also, like fizzy said, if there really IS such a big cut, it would've been big news. As of now, apart from this thread, I haven't heard of anything.
So it's either your disc damaged (refund) or your DVD damaged (repair). I would know, I once thought my SA DVD was spoiled, since the picture kept freezing. Turns out the DVD player was spoiled (was playing it at my grandma's place).

This is the Australian Limited Edition.

This is what I conclude:
-Pixar did not edit any part of the movie, if they did there would of been a huge outcry.
-There is no "Limited Edition" in the USA, which is further proof Pixar didn't edit the film.
Therefore, Pixar has no association with these "cuts".
Madman Entertainment (AUSTRALIA) have released two versions of the movie, a standard edition and a Limited edition. Since any non-limited edition of ghibli films cannot have cuts, the standard version must have the full "un-edited" english dub.
If Madman have chosen to trim (or butcher) the english version on the Limited Edition, then again, there would have been a mention on the madman studio ghibli forum (because the hardcore ghibli fans would of bought this edition right away). I cannot see why Madman would do such a thing . The release has more extras than the US version and has special foil embossed packaging - I don't know why they would cheat their fans.
neko bus, is the story still comprehendible with these cuts? If it is, then maybe it was inntentional, if not, it may be a glitch in a bacth of DVD's .
Sorry if I sound all too defensive, but I have alot of respect for Madman Entertainment and it's quite unsual for them to edit anything- especially if the US didn't already edit it in the first place.
Maybe a member from the UK could shed some light on this. Their release is identical to the Australian Limited Edition.
I, however could be totally wrong, because i don't have this release, but I am planning to purchase the Special edition in October. Maybe by then this issue will be cleared up.
