Artistic inspiration for Laputa?Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by wit0005 Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

I stumbled upon an article that talked about an artist who's work heavily inspired many of the backgrounds and imagery for Laputa: CITS. Foolishly, i lost his name and can't find the article. All i know is that he is a Japanese artist.

ANYBODY, Please help.

HOORAY.....FIRST POST.

here read this...

Q: What does "Laputa" mean?

"Laputa" is a floating island in Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", though according to Pazu, Swift's Laputa "is just a story in a book", and his Laputa is for real. In Swift's novel, Laputans are a people who literally have their "heads in the clouds".

At first, Miyazaki wanted to make a film about a "flying Treasure Island", and he borrowed the name "Laputa" from Swift's book. He probably shouldn't have. "Laputa" is actually a (really) bad word in Spanish. It means "prostitute" (or worse - it's really indecent, so we can't tell you), and Swift apparently knew this when he named the island. It is not clear whether Miyazaki knew the origin of this word or not, but he could've avoided the problem only if he'd stuck to his original plan of spelling it as "Raputa" (the Japanese language doesn't differentiate between L and R). Now, with Disney acquiring the global distribution rights for it, we are wondering how Disney is going to market it in Spanish-speaking countries (including the US). Well, I know of an artist named Naohisa Inoue, whose paintings were influenced by the floating islands in Laputa and who designed the backgrounds in the fantasy sequences of Whisper of the Heart.
