Vocaloids are... computer programs, basically. Programs for making songs, using voice banks. Each Vocaloid has a voice and a character representing it. Miku was the first, and she's the most famous. "The world's first virtual diva". The other most well-known ones are the Kagamine twins Rin and Len, Luka Megurine, Kaito and Gakupo. There are many others though.

I haven't been listening to much besides Vocaloid for the last week or so, come to think of it...

Pretty sure Miku was a second-gen Vocaloid, lol. Vocaloids only started getting faces when Crypton released their line, and in that sense, yes, Miku was the first from Crypton's lineup.
