GITS SAC - Solid State Society

Watched this just now.

I think this might be the best GITS movie of the three. It's based in the timeline of the second SAC TV series, after it I assume and uses similar artwork throughout so it joins on seamlessly. I think the production values are higher than the 2nd TV series which is what you'd expect from an OVA although I know this was shown in movie theatres too. But on the whole the artwork and CGI is very smooth and very pleasing, it feels like a live action movie; the sense of weight and gravity as things jump, fall, drive and fly is pretty much perfect.

As usual the sci-fi hardware of cars, machines and helicopters is very nicely done.

The movie has one of the most complex plots of any anime I've yet seen, in fact I'd say it was much more complex than the second movie. But it was complex in terms of the political manouvering that was going on in the case that Section 9 was assigned too, not complex in terms of the philosophical "up its own arseness" the second movie suffered from. So complex in a good way.

There was almost no fanservice, in fact just a bit of sexyness in two scenes but in each it was there for a good reason. So isn't really fanservice I guess.

The story continues to explore the dilemma between human and machine as well as that of an ageing society and one that becomes more and more dependent on the internet. All good stuff.

As usual a cracking score by Yoko Kanno, the ending theme being particularly good.

Throughout all the GITS stories there has been this unspoken or only slightly alluded to relationship between the Major and Batou and in the final scene of this movie there was another almost-but-not-quite-sexy but at the same time touching moment between them. Very nicely done.

If you like sci-fi anime, and lots of action, watch this, its great.

If you like very simple stories its one to avoid.

TBH the opening theme didn't really hit home with me, but a lot of the incidental music has been used before in the second series, which again makes it feel like a part of that series. The closing theme may be among one of the best themes Yoko Kanno has written. For any movie.

It uses the same processes as the 2nd series - characters use 2D animation although I suspect they are all computer rendered. They look a lot smoother and nicer than in the 2nd GIG. Some of the Majors dives and jumps are definitely CGI. All vehicles are CGI(helicopters, planes, cars, Tachikoma-whatsits, etc), its a very good blend of old and new styles.

It's not fully CGI in the way Appleseed was or the Final Fantasy movies.

There aren't many 'digital' scenes, i.e. taking place inside peoples heads or the network that seemed to be over-used in 2nd GIG.

All in all its a good movie, you just need to be really awake to follow the plot!

FYI it's not a big-scren movie btw.

But yes, short of the original movie, SSS is the best in the GITS anime family.
