The Cat Returns and Whisper of The Heart

Is The Cat Returns supposed to be one of Shizuku's stories from Whisper of The Heart.

Some of the characters are similar between the movies. Moon the cat from Whisper of the Heart is a lot like Muta in the Car returns and the baron statue occures in both.

Is The Cat Returns suposed to be Shizuku's finished and refined story?

Just wondering since they seem so similar.

There r only 2 similarities the movies share: 1)They r both based on manga by the same author, Hiiragi Aoi, and 2)the baron appears in both movies.

The End.

Muta here is NOT the same Muta that appears in Mimi, despite what many websites claimed, nor is it a sequel either. The Muta here has appeared before only once in the actual manga sequel, Mimi wo Sumaseba: Shiawase na Jikan (Happy Times), before making a reappearance in another manga Baron, Neko no Danshaku (Baron, The Cat Baron), where the latter is what The Cat Returns is based upon.

I own all 3 mangas btw That's how i know, meh.

Isn't Muta's real name actually Renaldo Moon.. or am I completely mistaken? I always thought The Cat Returns to be one of the stories that Shizuku wrote in Whisper of the heart. But then again I might just be mistaken.

Yeah well, in the original Mimi manga, there were 2 cats, Moon and Luna. I'm not sure which came first, but the name Muta later stuck with Hiiragi's cat characters. My guess is that Yoshifumi Kondou (or maybe the scriptwriter) decided to name the cat Muta, and Hiiragi decided to follow suit in her manga sequel and the Neko manga.

Actually, The Cat Returns initially started out as a project requested by a Japanese theme park for a 20min short starring cats; Miyazuki WANTED it to have Muta/Renaldo Moon, Baron, and an antique shop (hence the similarities). Hiiragi wrote the manga, which eventually became the film after the theme park cancelled their request.

To make things easier, I suggest considering the film to be a kind of tribute to Whisper of the Heart; it's neither a direct sequel nor Shizuku's story, but a more independant film that references back to WotH.

This... is a very old thread.

But the information, while without source, is still relevant and interesting.

Wish Ghibli will make more of these "similarities, reaapearance, referencing back to... and tribute" kind of movies......

I KNOW ITS NOT A SEQUEL BUT ITS THE CLOSEST ONE.. IMO.. > >

A few easter eggs in Pom Poko in the city parade scene. I also have a theory that a young Mr Nishi and his musician friends from WOTH can be seen in one crowd scene. Pom Poko and WOTH are set in the same town, Tama, which is a new town built in the 60s about 35m SW of Tokyo. So the town we see being built in Pom Poko is the town Shizuku lives in, in WOTH in a story set about 30 years later.

Pom Poko and WOTH were also in production at the same time so there is a possibility of the two teams making a little planned self-referral joke in there.

In Howl's Moving Castle you see Pazu run past Howl's "Wizard Jenkins" doorway - Howl and Laputa are set in very similar west-Europe inspired fantasy worlds at about the same steampunk level of technology.

I can't immediately think of any other Ghibli easter eggs or self-referrals of this kind.
