Your first Ghibli encounter, and how you fell in love with its works

When was your first Ghibli encounter, and how did you fall in love with its works?

To start with I was born in the year of Laputa. (^_^)

When I was still very small, my parents brought me to a theatre to see the local release of a Miyazaki movie (probably Nausicaa). As you can tell, I was still very small at that time. I cried in the middle of the movie, and my dad brought me to the toilet and beat me, So this is my memorable first encounter with Ghibli. (Being so small of course I could not remember all these. It was my mom who told me about them) (^_^)

Since the local release of Kiki, the TV stations have always been showing the Ghibli movies in the long holidays, like the Chinese new year, Easter or Christmas. And every time these movies were shown I was glued to the TV. As a result I had a very sufficient degree of exposure to the Ghibli films in my youth. Although I generally liked them, I had not come to the degree of falling in love with them.

When Spirited Away was shown here, we used some free tickets (credit card gifts) to watch it in the theatre. The fantastic 2-hour experience blew me away, and I was still glued to my seat with my mouth wide opened even when the movie had ended. Since then Spirited Away has been one of my favourites.

Last year we subscribed to the Cable TV, on which the Ghibli movies are shown frequently. The sudden increase of exposure to the old Ghibli titles revived my interest in them. In a certain month I watched Kiki four times. The more I watch these Ghibli movies, the more I understand them, and the more I love them.

The discovery of a certain online Miyazaki discussion group further enhanced my interest in the Ghibli works. I learnt much more about the them and gained the tendency of digging deeper and deeper into them. Gradually I found that they have already blown all my previous favourites out of the water.
