Posted by husky51 on 10.02.2012, 11:56 AM: I don't watch near the amount of anime that many others in the Tavern do, but fanservice is present in most of them IMO to some degree or another. I personally like the anime and manga that do not have much fanservice if any at all. To me it detracts from the storyline. Even Ghibli has some fanservice in it, the scenes where the underclothing is exposed, etc. Admittedly, not much and that is fine with me.

Posted by Saddletank on 10.02.2012, 12:20 PM: I rate NGE as the finest anime TV series written. There are really very minimal bits in it that involve nudity and I would not call any of them fanservice because when you see the whole story, those scenes are in there for a reason. They tell us things about the characters.

Posted by arren18 on 10.02.2012, 12:50 PM: I think it's hugely overrated. It's not terrible, and especially towards the end there are some interesting themes that come up, but the pacing is bad and a lot of the first half doesn't serve the story much or even explore the themes all that well. And I only liked one character.

Posted by husky51 on 10.02.2012, 03:58 PM: Perhaps I mis-used the term, 'fanservice'. I was referring to the exposure of underwear and brief nudity, etc... regardless of whether it was gratuitous or not. |
Posted by saviour2012 on 10.02.2012, 04:03 PM: My bad

Posted by husky51 on 10.02.2012, 06:54 PM: And that's the good point about us, saviour. You have expressed your opinion and I, for one, can accept that. I do not agree with it entirely, but it is your opinion on NGE...

Posted by arren18 on 10.02.2012, 07:04 PM: I suppose whether or not something is really fanservice can be a tricky question. In live-action film, the camera picks up real things which can include incidental examples of, say, nudity, whereas in animation, somebody has to draw it, which makes it more deliberate.
