All the characters we have are regular earthly beings (even if they are shapeshifters) so I wouldn't necessarily expect any gods to appear. But then I guess we don't know enough about this world yet, so who knows what might happen.

Posted by Saddletank on 06.19.2014, 03:57 AM: Shall we move on to watching episode 3 over the weekend?
|
Posted by arren18 on 06.19.2014, 04:28 AM: Sounds fine to me. I'm quite happy with the current schedule, since we all seem to be watching it at different times of week. Adding more episodes per week would be overdoing it.

Posted by husky51 on 06.19.2014, 05:29 AM: that was only ginkau and kinkau that were the cats, the snotty brothers, but they are all tanuki in this ep even Raijin, I believe since she is their (the cats) sister or did I miss something...... I was fooled at first thinking that it was Benten with the Professor...

Posted by Saddletank on 06.19.2014, 05:39 AM: Yes, the giant cat 'dolls' were just forms the nasty brothers assumed. A pretty weird form to take, a statue that can't alter its shape, only shuffle along. Presumably there's a reason in Japanese folklore to make the cat form significant. Roar? Arren? Orphic? Anyone else studying Japanese culture? Have you come across a meaning that might fit?

Posted by arren18 on 06.19.2014, 05:50 AM: It's the kind of cats people put in their houses for good luck. I don't really know what the significance was in this context.

Posted by husky51 on 06.19.2014, 11:47 AM: Thanks, arren, I re-watched it and saw where I missed the name of the sister Ebisugawa, Kaisel... I must have missed it and saw Raijin and thought that was the sisters name...

Posted by husky51 on 06.19.2014, 06:19 PM: I got volunteer work again this weekend on the Vietnam Vets Memorial down in San Diego. Every third Saturday my friend and I go down and join the rest of the guys. Mostly just maintenance now and I don't know how much longer I can do it. Can't do much work, so the guys just have me tell visitors about it if they show up.

Posted by Roarkiller on 06.20.2014, 08:54 AM: According to wikipedia there's no concrete background for the maneki-neko, only they were quite a modern invention (late 1800's). My guess is that its use was entirely random.

Posted by Orphic Okapi on 06.20.2014, 08:01 PM: Okay, I've now seen episodes 2 and 3. I thought the third episode was the strongest by far, although I'm still not entirely sold on the series as a whole. I think the frog-brother is now my favorite character. His voice actor is the least hammy.

Posted by Orphic Okapi on 06.21.2014, 05:57 PM: But...that's what I was trying to do, critique the show based on what I just watched. Since I didn't really like what I watched, I tried to explain why. That involved bringing up the director because I think he does a boring job. What am I supposed to do if I don't like the voice acting or the way the show is directed? Just say, "It sucks," and leave it at that? I could certainly limit myself to gut reactions and leave out all rationalization, but does this club really need a guy just occasionally grumbling "bah humbug"?

Posted by Orphic Okapi on 06.21.2014, 07:59 PM: Just to elaborate a little on my original point: when an anime is adapted from a manga, the visual style is often lifted directly from the source material. Character designs usually aren't changed a lot, and you'll even see the anime reproducing scenes from the comic panel by panel. I think a lot of animation studios rely heavily on the original manga as a visual guide.
