  Marnie & Kaguya

Waiting impatiently (hey, I'm old, ok...lol) for both Marnie and Kaguya to show up here in the US...

Anyone heard anything about releases???

No news yet.

Maybe Ghibli won't release them in the US since they were received so poorly by Japanese audiences.

They'll turn up at some point. If it's not Miyazaki then it doesn't have the same significance outside of Japan, so it's probably low-priority. And as they're taking a bit of a break, that might slow down things too.

Both Marnie and Kaguya received better reviews in Japan than The Wind Rises. They didn't make money, but among the people who saw them, they were more well liked than The Wind Rises

While liking all three of the above movies, I liked them best in this order: Marnie, The Wind Rises and then Princess Kaguya...
While liking Kaguya, it just wasn't as fun to me as the other two...

Welcome back, msteve60...

I just finished watching "When Marnie was There" again...

I remember the first time I saw it, I had had the book for over a month and refused to read it until I saw the anime. I felt the book would fill out the on screen story and it did...

I again was somewhat overwhelmed by the interconnections of all the characters but sis follow along to some extant. I will have to read the book again as well. All in all I did enjoy the movie an d yes, I cried again...

A good work...

Maybe a bit off topic but I cant get into Studio Ghibli like "When Marnie was There" films that are based on real life stuff, I enjoy getting away from everyday issues so the ones based around fantasy I find I enjoy more.

I'm not sure what you mean. Marine is a fantasy story.

I think that I understand what you mean, arren.

For example, 'Marnie' is basically the story of a girl who grows up emotionally through her interaction with another, apparently normal girl and not a radish spirit, or a nature spirit who flies or a cat who is a bus. Another example of the type of movie you are talking about might be, even though they are drawn in a line cartoon style, 'My neighbors, the Yamadas'...

I was going to take a quote from Princess Kaguya, but got absorbed in the movie and watched the whole thing.

I never did pick out a quote, lol...

Did you like it more this time? You said before that you didn't enjoy it quite as much as other recent Ghibli films.

Yes, surprisingly, I didn't think of that until I read your question, and yes, I did seem to enjoy it more this time around. I was able to follow the storyline more this time and sympathized with the Princess and her feelings more.

I have only seen it once and I didn't pay much attention to the plot, I was just too absorbed in the incredible animation. As Takahata's last work, its a very fitting memorial.
