its a uniquely Miyazaki film, one only he could make and its uniqueness places it beyond being easily critiqued.[About Porco Rosso]

I could swear I have seen some of these animations before. Unrelated:

Interesting trailer. Visually it is 100% Ghibli in form. It begs the question: in later years how much if the "Ghibli look" or "Ghibli style" was down to the continuing presence of Miyazaki?

I find it really interesting. Founding a new studio was a clever move, since Studio Ghibli is strongly perceived as related to Miyazaki's work. It can be their own thing and they don't need to be "slaves" of the public's expectations to what should be a Ghibli film.
They remain with Ghibli's art style tho... I don't know what that really means. Maybe it's a way to promote their first film, maybe they won't do it with the next ones, maybe it's a kind of homage...? IDK.

Somehow I'd missed that this was due to be released this summer. I saw the trailer again at the cinema today and hadn't expected it, since I imagined it would be further off.

I was kind of hoping Nishimura and friends would stick around at Studio Ghibli, if only to continue the Ghibli legacy under the same banner. But I guess the way things are going there now (Miyazaki "retiring" and allowing everything to grind to a halt), it was wise to break off like this.

I do like that they've kept the familiar Ghibli art style. I wish there was some way to see the film in the US before the official dub comes out in a year or so (assuming there is a dub).

Sounds interesting. Looking at the descriptions, it could be pretty good. It seems like they want to make different kinds of stories and not just the kind of fantasy story that people know Miyazaki for.
