Why did you choose Ghibli Tavern?

Hey all!

Why did you choose to join Ghibli Tavern?

(I'm a big fan of Ghibli, and anime in general, and I'm doing some research on online forums as part of my degree - and you guys all seem very friendly so I was hoping you might help me out )

If you don't mind helping me, I've got a few more questions here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/7DDTHRN
(there's only 10 and it's v v short)

The study is on why people join and engage with online forum communities, anyone who takes part will be completely anonymous in the final paper - and be given a pseudonym (you may pick your own if you want!). If you don't want any forum replies in the paper just say, and if you have any questions about the study just PM me!

(but yeah please reply to this thread it would make my life ) this is also a link to the survey for non-copy and pasters

Personally, I stumbled upon the forum accidentally. I stayed for the close-knit community and the positivity, personally.

Thanks for the reply!

One person filled out the survey (it may have been you??) and their responses were genuinely interesting - and I'd love to chat with that person a bit more! (so if it was you, or you read this - please message me/reply I'd love to talk - just about anything and everything, as I enjoy getting to know people)

Also after coming here I've been motivated to watch some Ghibli - I've always wanted to but never got round to it. My friend from home loves Howl's Moving Castle and has always recommended it to me - is it any good? I've seen 5cm Per Second (I know it's not Ghibli) and thoroughly enjoyed that if it helps.

I was reading up on Ghibli and discovered that an Earthsea adaptation was in the works (I didn't know at that time that it would be one of Ghibli's weaker films). As I was looking for fansites to get more information, I found the Tavern, and since I was pretty into online forums at the time, I joined.

It may not be as active as it once was, but it still turned out to last better than other forums I used, so I'm still here now!

As for recommendations, HMC is probably a decent starting point. If you like 5cm/s then maybe you'd enjoy the less fantastical films though, like Only Yesterday or The Wind Rises.

My first anime was way back in 1960... I remember sitting in the back of the family car with my sister and watching "Alakazam the Great" at the age of 13 or 14. Over the years, mostly after I got out of the Navy, it was something I knew about but wasn't into until I had kids of my own and started seeing more and more. Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Cowboy BeBop, many others.

Later i realized that some of the ones I liked best were Ghibli's and started looking for them. Them I found the Tavern and been a member ever since. I miss a lot of the members that have become inactive, but a few of them still pop in now and them and it is a pleasure to say hi to them... Me? I will be a member until I die... I love the Ghibli movies and I love the Members that I have come to know over the years. They are my online family...

And like many families, we sometimes have our differences, but we have generally resolved them. This will happen with the different viewpoints and religons of our worldwide membership. We see things from different angles according to where we were raised.

i am active in lots of forums. Most of them are related to science and technology.

Ghibli is the only non-science forum i am active in.

As to answer your questions, i came across tavern after i saw spirited away. although i was accustomed to anime, i never imagined that i dont know about such a great anime. then to my surprise i found the studio ghibli. Due to bad communication skill from studio ghibli stuff which is true to this day, i could not find any information about studio ghibli fans.

after much effort i came across nausicaa.net and onlineghibli.com which had quite a bit information about a lot of things. But i think the primary reason why i joined tavern was to know about the feelings of fellow ghibli fans about certain questions.

In my humble opinion i think that is the most important factor most join a forum.

However i stayed in the forum due to its uniqueness. It is completely different than any forum i ever come across.

NB: i looked at your survey, it was quite long. so sorry i could not answer the long questions there. i think this post answers many of those questions.

NB2: you had a interesting question, if it gave me anything special. answer is yes. We all live in a different country with different culture and customs. From this forum i learned how to be tolerant. this is absolutely impossible offline(meaning in my real-life) because of the confirmation bias and also because you can not find this diversity in most of the communities around the world.
