  Miss Hokusai

Its a 2015 animated film directed by Keiichi Hara (Summer Days with Coo, Colourful) and is adapted from the episodic manga by Hinako Sugiura, first published in 1992. The film tells the story of the phase of young adulthood of Katsushika ÅŒi, a talented female artist living in Edo in the early 1800s but whose skills are overshadowed by her father.

I found the film a true delight, low key, calm and beautifully if simply animated. It reminded me a little of Mushi-shi and perhaps something Isao Takahata might have directed. It involved dream sequences and fantasy sequences drawn in quite different styles.

I recommend it highly; a simple tale of struggling artists interwoven with fantastic tales of Japanese folklore and myth and set against a very earthy and unfair world of suffering and human limitations.

I recommend Hara's other two films that I mentioned above; all of them touch upon the spiritual or supernatural, interwoven with ordinary people and their extraordinary struggles.

This is one I've been wanting to see. I thought it looked good when I first heard of it. I should get round to watching it some time!

It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so loving what - Stephen Fry.

Yes, I forgot to mention the music. I wasn't expecting modern rock to feel right but somehow it did.
