Er, no, wrong again! The Atacama desert in Chile is the driest place on earth. The Antarctic is VERY wet as it snows there a lot. (Snow is largely frozen water you know).
Don't go getting all cocky now, lol!
Check this out...
(this is taken from http://www.flex.net/~lonestar/coldest.htm)
Antarctica
The lowest temperature ever recorded on earth was -129F recorded in 1983 at the Russian Base Vostok in Antarctica. Antarctica, a continent owned by no one, covers the southern end of our globe. In addition to being the coldest place on earth, Anarctica is also the wettest and the driest place on earth. How is this possible?
The Wettest Place on Earth
Over ninety eight percent of Anarctica is covered by ice. Antactica contains seventy percent of the earth's fresh water and ninety percent of the earth's ice.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest sheet of ice on earth, with an average depth of 7,200 feet. According to NASA's Cold Facts, "the thickest ice found is in Wilkes Land, where it reaches a depth of 15,669 feet: about as deep as the highest of the Alps is high." If this ice cap were to melt the sea level would rise an average of 230 feet and would inundate most coastal cities, including New York, London, and Hong Kong.
The Driest Place on Earth
Antarctica is technically a desert. It receives less than two inches of precipitation a year, about the same amount of precipitation as the Sahara Desert.
One interior region of the Antarctic is known as The Dry Valleys. These valleys have not seen rainfall in over two million years. With the exception of one valley, whose lakes are briefly filled with water by inland flowing rivers during the summer, the Dry Valleys contain no moisture (water, ice, or snow). The reason why the Dry Valleys exist are the 100 mph Katabatic down winds which evaporate all moisture. The freezing temperatures and the absence of water, plant life, and animal life simulate, to a degree, conditions on the Planet Mars. Consequently, the Dry Valleys are used as training grounds for astronauts who may one day make a voyage to our neighboring planet.
I did say that I meant the Dry Valleys region, not the whole of Antarctica! And yes, I am aware that snow is frozen water... but I do hope that you enjoyed insulting my intellegence. Seriously, was that really necessary? This place is meant to be friendly!

Here's a depressing, yet interesting fact. Did you know that more American soldiers commited suicide after returning from Vietnam, than actually died during it?
Also, the Dry Valleys region in the Antarctic is the windiest, the coldest, and the driest place on earth, and parts of it have not seen rain for over 2 million years!

What are your favourite quotes? | |
I thought this'd be a fun, and interesting, idea for a thread...what are your favourite quotes, sayings, song lyrics, pieces of poetry, etc?
Everyone has a few lines from something tucked away in their heads that they think are fabulous!! So what are yours??
Personally, my motto, and favourite lines ever, come from a comic book character called Wobbley Headed Bob, who appears in the Squee comics, and that is...
'I am the enlightened dispenser of truth. Hear me and evolve.'
I also love these lines from the poem 'Ozymandias' by Percy Bysshe Shelley...
'My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
And finally, these incredible lines from Macbeth by the ultimately awesome William Shakespeare...
"Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow,
a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage
and then is heard no more:
it is a tale told by an idiot,
full of sound and fury,
signifying nothing." (Act V, Scene V).
I also love the lyrics from Panic! At The Disco's song, 'London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines'It Yet' (how can you NOT love a song that has a title THAT ridiculous?)...
"Just for the record,
The weather today is
Slightly sarcastic with a good chance of
A. Indifference or
B. Disinterest
In what the critics say."
So, what does everyone else have to say? (^-^)

I'm sure a million people on this thread have already recommended Terry Pratchett, and they're right! I've just read the 6 Dune books written by Frank Herbert, if you like sci-fi, you'll love em! The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is freakin' hilarious, and I also really like I, Robot by Isaac Asimov, his Foundation Trilogy kicks ass too!
And for a really quick read, try Lemony Snicket...oddly dark and a touch disturbing! And although it's a bit wanky, Phillip Pullman's Her Dark Materials trilogy is well worth reading...the first book's a little slow, but the 2nd and 3rd are fab!
Hope this helps dude! (^-^)

OK, I'm way into Asian horror, so here are some of my recommendations, and please note that although a number of these films have been remade by idea stealing american pig-dogs, I am ALWAYS refering to the Asian original!
The Ring Trilogy, obviously! Esp. Ring and Ring 0, Ring 2 is good, but not great.
Ju-On The Grudge - I swear that this is the single scariest film I have ever seen in my life, seriously, it took me like a year to completely get over the sheer terror incited by this film, so you have been warned!
Premonition - not strictly a horror, but great none the less.
The Eye - amazing!
Audition - a film from the ever fabulous and ever twisted Takashi Miike, the ending will make you squirm!
Versus - a comedy horror about Japanese zombies...brilliant!
Phone - a solid Korean horror.
A Tale of Two Sisters - some truly creepy moments.
R-Point - a Korean horror set during the war, quality!
Ichi The Killer - again not strictly a horror, but so full of much blood, guts and weirdness, you won't even notice!
Hope this helps dude! (^-^)

Top 5 are:
1) Spirited Away - undoubtably THE greatest film ever made!
2) My Neighbour Totoro - the sweetest, most innocent film you're ever likely to see.
3) Howl's Moving Castle - beautifully animated and Howl is a total hottie!
4) The Cat Returns - good to have some more info about Baron, he's uber cool!
5) Laputa - for the comedy villains and the awesome robot!

This is just the thread I've been looking for! Be warned, this is a long technology related rant!!
First of all, I got the Sony MP3 player for my birthday, but couldn't use it because it only works on Windows 2000 or XP, and I've only got '98. So I got 2000, but then found out I can't use it without putting it onto audio disc first. So I ordered audio discs, but the wrong ones came so I had to send them back and at this moment, I STILL can't use my MP3 player!
Then...
EMule packed up!!
Then...
my firewall stopped working for NO APPARENT REASON!! Got another security package but that only worked on Windows 2000, which I don't have yet, so I had to get ANOTHER security package that works on '98! This one kept going mental and not allowing anything through, including eBay and Google!! So I had to uninstall it, then reinstall it, and it worked fine.
Then...
my mouse broke!! Had to go buy a new one!! Got a good deal though, only £2.49 from Argos, but the left button is a bit sticky and sometimes you have to double click like 3 times before the page comes up!
Now...
my discs are on their way, but I have to backup everything on my p.c and I have no idea how, which means I'll have to call my mate and get him to talk me through it, and as I've had so many probs, and have to keep phoning him, he's probably getting really annoyed with me!!
That feels sooo much better!! I freakin' HATE computers!! Why do they hate me??!! But as soon as they work properly, they're the greatest things in the world!!
BTW, Endless Twilight, I did your Final Fantasy character thing...I am
. Is that good? Never played the game, adore the look of it though, I have a super sweet poster of that woman with the black dress made of belts...awesome!!
