That sucks. I have a Mei and the Kitten Bus calendar that my Japanese friend sent me. I could possibly scan the images, sometime.

It's hard to believe that they're not on the internet somewhere. But maybe they aren't. : (

I hear you, I'm done.

I did originally contribute a bit to the subject. So, back on topic. Do you, as well, find the statement of the wire world always being to be a great loop hole? Or something not to be over-analyzed?

On the former allegation, I was. But you weren't being an innocent commenter, so dissecting your post didn't seem unjustified.

I was going to let this pass, but you're "Try checking the dictionary" comment was too good to pass by. For it was blatant rudeness and not constructive criticism. While I have always been formal, light and polite to you. And since, you know, you are incredibly wrong. "Gothic" is in no way a synonym of "out of the ordinary."

I am not sure why you assumed I was referring to "mascara-and-black-jacket-wearing rock stars." (Remember children "assuming makes an ass out of you and me!" Especially since I made no reference to anything of the sort whatsoever. And that definition is scarcely a true definition of the word, anyway.

"Gothic" is most commonly referring to a French architecture of the 16th century. Or it refers to the German "Goths."

So, perhaps, YOU sir should try checking a dictionary. Or you should learn to stop assuming things that have no validity, basis for assumption or proof. Or you could be a fair critic. I don't mind critics, especially not on a film forum.

I do mind someone needlessly picking apart another's comments in an elitist fashion for no reason or basis. It isn't impressive, although it may initially seem to be.

It's nice. Simple and uncluttered, which is good.

I'd add more meat to each page, though. So each page looks like a website and not a webpage quickly put together in Firefox.

Also, I'd break up the individual films. There's so much information pertaining to each film you'll need to add. So, having one scroll box of everything is overwhelming.

What I think you should really think about is "how will this site be unique and informative?" As your links prove, there are so many ghibli fan sites reiterating the same information over and over. So what will make yours special? What new insight will it bring to the films?

Also, is it going to be a Ghibli site or a Miyazaki site?

I don't hate the Disney versions, myself.

They did alter quite a bit of the original movies, especially the older ones. However, they did it so the American children's audience could better understand and be entertained.

It is undeniable that American culture is vastly different than Japanese. So when the Japanese heard the 50's music in the beginning of Kiki, they thought it sounded kind of cool, cute and it set the proper mood. To American children, this would sound outdated, boring, it would remind them of their grandparents and set the incorrect mood.

Also, Japanese are much more subtle in their humor while Americans are loud and blatant. I don't think Americans would even understand that Jiji was supposed to be a bit quirky (or even a boy) if they kept a similar voice.

It is sad that this type of alteration has taken place and is needed for the stupid Americans. However, I think otherwise, Ghilbli movies wouldn't appeal so well to Americans and these beautiful movies would be passed over entirely. And once people really start getting into the series, I find they explore more into the original Japanese versions.

If Disney hadn't released these movies I'd be much more ignorant of the films. And also, Studio Ghibli would be hindered of some of their greatest profits.

I think it's a win-lose situation.

There's a difference.

And SEL is one that steps over the border. It's not just "not light"; this is pretty heavy. The storyline is pretty deep, even if a fair number say it isn't.

"Not light" to me refers to anime like Escaflowne and JinRoh. Heavy would be this, and others like Paranoia Agent. Especially Paranoia Agent. Now THAT is one SERIOUSLY heavy stuff.

Why are you always so pessimistic and critical?

I don't think he was even linking "light anime" to "gothic anime" so I'm not sure why you've pointed out there is a difference. I mean, I think that is quite obvious without being said.

And although I agree it's an understatement to say SEL is simply not light, I don't think he was actually trying to make a point of saying it's above being extremely heavy. He was just being general.

I'm sure he doesn't care about your comments at all. It just bothers me, that you read too far into it and were critical above giving him the benefit of the doubt. Which, from what I've read of his posts, he deserves.

You're very nit-picky, aren't you?

About Serial Experiments Lain, I've seen the series and really liked it for a long time. I like its mood, characters (Lain is such a cool character), animation, story line and soundtrack (Boa is one of my favorite bands). But in retrospect, there are so many loopholes I'm left disappointed.

They say that the wired world has always been, so how was this before wires existed?

Nonetheless, it's a good series.

I really disliked Paranoia Agent at first. But it's grown on me. A lot, actually. Unlike SEL, though, it's full of more action and energy. Depressing though it may be, it seems to be more of a thriller. And it mixes in a lot of humor, cleverness and quirkiness that SEL lacks (but doesn't need).

I also really like this animation, too. Especially in the movement.

Heh, I take it you are Filipina?

Yeah. All of my favorite films started out as risks. Which means they're all innovative and unique from the norm. (^_^)

Never heard of it. Go to Amazon, IMDB, fansites, the DVD releaser's site and see what other animes fans of the show like.

I think most fantasy is too dry for Studio Ghibli. I haven't read most of the ideas posted so far, though. But a lot of fantasy novels are so epic in scale. Although many Ghibli movies cover vast lands, the stories are always small and focused. Which makes them personal and special. That's why I think 99% of fantasy wouldn't really work for Ghibli.

As for older classics about war, I think Ghibli does a wonderful job at capturing time periods yet making characters ageless. However, war has so many brutal elements in it and I don't think many novels capture the childish views of it. Like in 'GoTF.'

I would like to see 'David Copperfield' done by Takahata. Dickens books usually seem too harsh and adult for Ghibli material.

But if anything, I would die to see a movie adaptation of Miyazaki's Shuna no Tabi. Would never see light, I know, but I can dream, right?

Otherwise, maybe I'd like to see the famous japanese novel "I am a cat" adaptation. Haven't personally rwad it, but I heard it's pretty renowned in the literary world.

I agree. Their original stories are my favorite.

I've read the entire English translation of "I am a Cat." I adore it. It's actually two books. Very long. I think Studio Ghibli would do a good job of making it into a short story!

I have. Like old samurai movies and 80's horror flicks.

They draw all of the story boards almost close to a full animation (much closer than most animations today and certainly most animes). Then, they put them into the computer, color, define the lines, add effects and movement.

Most of the original coloring is drawn, though. Usually by the creator of the movie. As in, the scene, the characters, the props, etc. Some scenes are hand drawn.

A couple of times, I think, the studio has sent animation over to Korea to be computerized. But I'm pretty sure 99.9% of it is done within the studio.

There's a lot about this on special features in the American dvds.

Computers make the movies possible and so clean looking. But as you see in the story boards, art books, scenes and characters, the artistic drawing of the animation is key to the studio's individuality, style and beauty.

The site looks very nice! (^_^) I really like the content you put into it. I like the fading effect, too.

There's some large, white box that travels when you scroll, though. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be for an advertiser or something.
