The common criticism, as I've read, is that it should have been a little shorter. In this regard, it brings to mind Pompoko...
I rather agree, but also I agree with the majority that consider it a very good movie, one of the best from Takahata. If this is his last work, as it would seem, it's a nice way to retire (same as The Wind Rises for Miyazaki).
BTW, in the event that there is someone from Argentina lurking here: the movie will be shown in the BAFICI festival.

For me, that music sounds as pretty standard argentine tango
I'm argentine, and I play tango ... and also Merry-Go-Round of Life ! :-) see my sig
It sounded to me as a "light" Piazzola... (in fact the first four notes of the melody are exactly the same as Calambre Seems to be the first track here http://www.emusic.com/album/various-arti...ensky/11647016/
I don't see a strinking resemblance, there is certainly some common elements in the phrase structure, but, as Roarkiller says, that's not rare: most "common" music (this includes from Haendel to Brahms... and most western popular music of last 150 years, including Beatles, Hisaishi and practically all music from movies and radio and tv) is based on the same patterns - once you learn the theory you get surprised that people still continue composing songs without repeating (at least not totally and obviously).

The options look so strange to me...
What is your age? 13- 17 / 18 / Over 18
(why is 18 so special??)
In which country did you spend your childhood?
Australia Vietnam China Africa America Pakistan
(looks so random... and Africa is not a country... and "America" can be either USA or the full continent)
etc

I liked that.

I love it. For me (and I'm concious that most Ghibli fans won't agree) this little TV movie is on par with Miyazaki and Takahata works (and infinitely superior to Arrietty, Poppy Hill, The cat returns, Earthesea...; contrarily to these, OW is a movie I enjoy to revisit often).
I love the subtle characters, non-obvious script - and the music. All very delicate and human, even if the animation has some rough edges, it all fits nicely.
Perhaps (in common with Only Yesterday) this is more apt to be enjoyed by not very young people, those who can look at their own adolescence from some distance? I'm not sure.

Just to think that Ponyo didn't even get a nomination - and they included instead "The Princess and the Frog"... Come on.

Scary moment during the night. Woke up and turned over and got real light headed, started to pass out...
It happened to me some years ago (about 6, I was ~ 40 y.o), one morning I could not get up, each time I tried to sit up on the bed I felt very lightheaded and I was forced to lie horizontal... At last I had to crawl (I live alone) on hands and knees towards the telephone to tell I was not going to work -and go back to bed. Only two or three hours later I could get up. It was a little scaring, but afterwards the doctor couldn't find anything wrong, and I has never ocurred to me again.

How old was Miyazaki before he started to make ghibli movies? Maybe goro still has some time to develop and gain confidence.
Hayao was 20 when he started doing animation, and 37 when he did "Conan, boy of the future" (1978). Each chapter of this series, without the need of great lushing backgrounds or magnificent sentimental music, showed the hand of a true artist, an creator with courage and love towards his characters and animation. Each chapter had at least a memorable and heart warming scene, and left with you with joy and wanting for more. I see nothing of that in movies like Arrietty or Poppy Hill.
I'm afraid it's not a matter of training or experience, it's a matter of genius.
