Asians tend to have bigger families. I come from a family of six and most of my cousins' families average five per. And now that they've started marrying it's getting even harder for me to remember everyone's names, lol.

Oh man, so lucky. I thought I had Thursdays off, only to find out after classes began that we had something then after all. I believe I'll have no classes on Fridays in second semester though.

I think it's interesting how it brings up the concept of a steady job. One of my profs told my class we would have to learn to adapt to a changing world which may involve having to go through multiple jobs and careers. For me, I know this is going to be true personally, because I cannot for the life of me imagine working a single job my whole life. I've seen this happen with my parents, and how unhappy they seemed with their work environments but chose to stick to them because of their safety net. My prof recommended trying to release that sense of security, and I found his words meant a lot, at least to me. I know I'm a mature and responsible human being. My choices are my own to make.

I may not have a steady job for a long time, but I have a lot of goals I am going after.

I dont know if i agree or not about a steady job. If i get a job with similar or better payscale then fine i will change it. But without those unless i have some money in my pocket to spend i wont leave it.

Guess i am a that type of guy.

I actually think most of the time to have a business of my own, but investing money is a great hurdle to overcome.

Only Allah knows what is actually going to work for me.

@fen
BIIG HUUGS, lady... hope you're feeling better soon...
-------------------------------------

My son had to turn down a dream job just recently that would have involved moving very soon and with the wife just about due and other complications, it just wasn't doable. He would have been the yardmaster at a rail facility... He is making pretty good money right now, but this would have been better and he would have gotten to play with a train set, a BIG TRAIN SET!

lol

I myself as a young man worked for a bit in a carnival, tending rides, soda jerk in a restaurant and then the Navy. Worked gas station, then security. Security became a back-up job that I could always count on for extra part-time or full-time work as needed. Not a lot of $, but always there. Then School bus driver, then bus mechanic, big rig vehicle inspector for Calif Hwy Patrol, tried my own business, bobtail truck driving (hurt my back, out for 2 yrs), eased back into mechanicing again, finished of with more security work now retired...

That was pretty much my entire working life...

Security jobs can pay a lot here depending on your amount of experience. My friend was working in security at a hospital before she had her baby. She was planning on working in a bigger hospital after gaining more experience, but she and her boyfriend are moving back out to Toronto to live with his family so they can save up to buy a house and cut down on childcare. I think she's sticking with security work when she moves back out there because she's had two decent jobs with it and loves it.

Oh yah, what do you guys think of gender wage gap? I know some people deny it exists, but I don't think they look into it more seriously. They say it's just a choice of careers without thinking of why women choose the fields they go into. It's pretty complex and interesting when I think about it. Women tend to face a lot of problems when they gain higher up jobs, like in management. I've known girls who've been managers and their coworkers didn't like that they were in charge and didn't want to "listen to a woman" (this deeply hurt one girl I met, because she was qualified but the male coworkers actually told her some awful stuff besides the other male manager). It's disheartening. I know even at jobs I've worked at, because I'm from a small, sort of traditional and in debt area. Men are usually given higher up jobs with better pay, especially summer jobs, and women are told they can't take on that job. I've faced this a lot. :/ Women and immigrant workers always were given the harder, less well paying jobs. Some women were in higher up positions, but those were few.

Also, I've worked in two all-female work spaces, where one was actively constructed that way to give women a free, safe work environment. The other just happened to be an area men weren't going into (early education). If that says anything.

Not sure if any of you have experienced similar experiences. We discuss this stuff in my gender studies classes because it's the only space I think women from my school feel they can vocalize their concerns and be heard.

hahaha, reminds me of when I worked for the CHP and while normally out in the field in my van, inspecting truck and bus operations, this one day I was in the office and Vicki came up to me. Now Vicki had been with the Department about a year and a half longer than I and doing the same work as me. While she was setting up her vacation dates, she found out that she was only getting 10 hrs of vacation time per month and I was getting 12 hrs. (BTW, I didn't know any of this at the time). She came up and asked , "Why?"...

Joker that I am, the first thing that popped out was, "Well, I guess because I'm a man and you're a woman!". After getting smacked in the back of the head, we went to the clerical office and straightened it out. I have always been in favor of equal rights for women in the workplace. Vicki was well qualified in her position and she was senior to me in the workplace although not in a supervisory way. I would have had no problem working under her supervision because I knew that she was qualified.

However, another woman in our office, Esther, a resounding NO!!!.

She was everything that a woman in that position should not have been. I truly believe that she was promoted to her position simply from being in the right place at the right time and was raised to her position because of her minority status and sucking up to her supervisors. BTW, Vicki was the first woman Motor Carrier Specialist in the state and Esther was the second. I worked with both of them prior to their advancement. I had seen, first-hand, the skills and work ethics of both woman and felt sorry for the state in advancing Esther.

My one complaint with the state was when, in an attempt to raise female minority levels in the workplace, they started bringing secretaries and clerical staff women out to the scales where we worked inspecting trucks and trailers and if they expressed an interest, then put them in that position to learn hands on the position that all of us previously, male and female, had earned by years of mechanical experience. I had seven years of journeyman level experience before I applied, the minimum required was six years. One guy hired before me had 26 yrs experience. The state of Calif was simply playing a numbers game...

My stance is that if a woman is qualified to hold a work position, then she should be compensated in the same manner as any man in a like position.

Yeah, I agree with qualification. Although, at the work places I've been to, the guys usually did jobs such as lifting (which there were plenty of strong women who could lift the boxes just as well, but were told they couldn't have the job because they were a woman) or pushing buttons, or emptying water buckets for our stations. Or even driving a forklift. Things we could do, but people for some reason felt we couldn't because of our gender. So it was less about qualification and more about gender issues unfortunately. It was the same that happened with a girl I know who has been a manager and dismissed despite being just as qualified. Some didn't like that she got the job over an older male student despite her having more experience in management. It's things like that.

Luckily, not all work spaces are like this, but I find perhaps a lot of lower wage jobs and high up positions are the reasons. The other thing is occupation. We're sort of conditioned to go into certain fields based on gender, unfortunately. Or so I've noticed. Not that everyone has to go in the same field, but a lot of traditionally female jobs do not always pay the most and things like that.

Also, what considered high wage per hour for working full time? The jobs I eventually want to get into pays about 20$-40$ an hour if I can become qualified for those fields. It seems like a lot to me? I'm not sure. This is for social work and just looking at job ads to see what I need to be qualified for most jobs.

I agree with husky that if someone is qualified then they should be respected.

But in some cases it is not always the case. At a managerial position one need to lead from front by doing real work. I feel male workers think that particular female worked her way up by her charms, which most of the time not the case.

This is a misconception generated by media which is affecting women's carrier specially if she is beautiful.

But it is not entirely false, but males forget some of them does the same.

FFF aren't there gender discrimination laws in Canada? Surely there are! In Britain those practices would land any employer in an expensive lawsuit in minutes!

This is 2014, not 1914! How can women even stand up for this ridiculous crap? Sue the b*****ds.

There are such laws, but it doesn't seem people follow them. Actually, for the factory work I did, you had to check off whether or not you were a visible minority (immigrant, woman, disabled). And they're supposed to commit to making sure you have a safe work environment with equal opportunities, yet it doesn't seem that way.

At the same time, a lot of the women working there don't really care or even question it. My friends and I seemed to be the only ones who thought it was unfair. I didn't really realize why we felt this way until I started studying why.

The difficulty with laws like that is that unless people report incidents then it can easily go unpunished. Suing a company isn't always an easy thing to do, so a boss with access to good lawyers can do what they like and not worry too much about any comeuppance.

So I saw Margaret Atwood today. I should have gone and talked to her. I found it funny how everyone was assuming she was a dark, twisted lady who would be too intense. I just laughed and said, she's just a person. My boyfriend and I both found her to be a very interesting and hilarious lady. Really wish we had gone to meet her. Some of my friends did and took pictures.

LOL at what Pope did

it is great that Islam does not have something like pope[in a big sense] who will just change the religion[in some sense] periodically.
