Hi Ian,

It's really easy if you can search in Japanese, but I guess not knowing the Japanese title was the problem as well. Anyway, no problem cause I've done searching for you. First of all the Japanese title: ガリバーの宇宙旅行

You can buy the DVD at Amazon over here: http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN...1990978-8188216

or at Yesasia... if you don't live in the US (like me) > use this the link:
if you do live in the US > use this link:

I guess this answers you question! If you have more problems finding stuff or have problems ordering > let me know!

Best regards,
Peter

By the way, maybe I'm wrong but I don't think many people have seen the anime classics mentioned above and there are MANY more works Miyazaki and Takahata worked on in the 60's and 70's. It's a real pitty that these films aren't well known (but that's probably because these films aren't available on English subbed DVD's).

IMO they're recommended because watching these films does not only allow to you see what Takahata and Miyazaki did in the past (way before Ghibli), but they also give you a better understanding on how Miyazaki and Takahata grew out to be the animators/directors they are today.

I'll try to make a list with links to DVD's of old films Miyazaki and Takahata worked on. >>> Nanashi, I guess you would also know some more films/dvd links???

Just decided I'll be making an item about these pre-ghibli films for my website, but I don't know when it'll be finished...

There's really a whole lot of them . I have only seen a few when I was a child, but have already forgotten what they're about. What do you think is a good starting point for Ghibli fans like me to get into pre-Ghibli anime?

Pre-Ghibli Titles that I have seen:
- Horus
- Panda Kopanda
- Cagliostro
- Conan

Pre-Ghibli Titles that I saw during childhood:
- Heidi
- Marco
- Anne (?)

Definitely watch the six episodes Miyazaki directed and wrote for the series Meitantei Holmes -- these are episodes 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, and 11 -- they're amazing! I think I prefer them over Nausicaa . Anyway, the episodes Miyazaki directed are very cleverly plotted and executed, the characters are great (especially Mrs. Hudson, a 19-year old widow! and Inspector Lestrade, who is alot like Inspector Zenigata in terms of his personality, but also Holmes, Watson, Moriarty (who like a typical Miyazaki villain isn't really evil and has a soft side to him), etc.). Also, the animation is great, very high frame-rate (even more so than Nausicaa and Laputa), lots of flying scenes, underwater scenes, crowd scenes, a great deal of wonderfully complex and detailed motion, and lots of "character acting", which really brings the characters to life. Plus, the depiction of London in the 1880s is superb. Here're just some synopses for each episode: http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/holmes/story.html

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try to get them if possible. At the meantime the one that I look forward the most to is Holmes . I wonder if I should get only the DVDs of the Miyazaki episodes or the full set. Do you think the non-Miyazaki episodes are good enough?

The six Miyazaki-directed episodes are on the first three R1 DVDs, and are the only ones worthy to watch. The other episodes are generally not as good.

Oh I see ... on the good side at least I can save quite a sum and spend it on other pre-Ghibli works.

Hi Wushu, great site you have there and a very impressive collection too.

Just to point out though, I don't think assistant director is as big a role as it sounds. Apparently Takahata was in this position for all of the following -

The Littlest Warrior (Anju to Zushiōmaru), 1961
Iron Story (Tetsu Monogatari), 1962
The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon (Wanpaku ÅŒji no Daija Taiji), 1962
The Biggest Duel in the Underworld (Ankokugai Saidai no Kettō), 1963
Hustle Punch (TV), 1965
Secret Little Akko (TV) (Himitsu no Akko-chan), 1969

Most general filmographies on his career excluded these movies.

True, you're right about assistant director not being as big a role as it sounds. Still I thought it was worth mentioning these films as it lets you see what they did in the past and how they started. It's not as the things they did way back then were really special, but it does let you see which road they followed from "nobody" to "animation god".

Oh I see your point, it is fascinating to see their history and artistic development. Besides, those movies looked quite good, perhaps you could review some of the rarer ones?

Animal Treasure Island was recently polished up (including the addition of an English dub and subtitles) and re-release, on dvd by 'Discotek media', but I'm not sure I should buy it.
