Book I read that would make a fantastic Ghibli film! | |
The book Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. There is an entire series of them (all equally brilliant, I highly recommend), six, so far, and the author said at least 2 more. They kind of have a hokey plot, but they are very well researched and the characters become like your family. The first one is about a woman, Clair, who has just reunited with her husband after scarcely seeing him in the last 8 years because of WWII (the year is like 1945). They are on a second honeymoon in Scotland. Anyway, she stumbles upon a circle of stones and walks through them and ends up 200 years ago in the 1700's. There she falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a red-haired Scott. A lot of dramatic events then occur through numerous plots and subplots. I imagine the landscapes in these books as absolutely amazing, which is why I first thought of Studio Ghibli. I think it would be a brilliant pairing. It would be something different for them, a little less fanciful, but there is still some magic to it. I think it is perfect.

Hmm, that sounds cool!
I'm a book worm and have found alot
of books I thought Ghibli would make into movies.
Like The Watcher series by Margaret Buffie.(maybe
not, but it'd be cool)
and the thing with the stone circle is the same in
The Watcher aseries too. Weird.
Except I forget where she lands..tee hee hee..
Sorry, the circle thing just made me think about this series
of books. But that series sounds Ghibli level, but probabally
not Ghibli material. I don't know, I never read
the books.

Sounds good, I'm torn between two choices -depending on who the director would be.
If it was (Hayao) Miyazaki, I would like to see an adaptation for the first Earthsea novel. When reading the book, not too long ago, I couldn't help but think this would make a fantastic Miyazaki movie. A modest fantasy, reminiscent of Nausicaa. Oh and since Miyazaki is a fan of Le Guin's books, less research would be needed -so we get to see it quicker .
I've never read the third book, so I'm not sure what Gedo Senki will be like -but if it's like the first book I'm sure I'll love it.
If it was Takahata, I think that a film for my favourite book, David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, would by great. The book is very much his style, focusing on individual characters and dealing with their emotions and life in general. It is, however, very long so I'm not sure it would be possible to do as a two hour movie.

Having read all the Earthsea books, I can safely say that the third one is better than the first. Also, in Gedo Senki, Miyazaki Jr seems to have used some elements from other Earthsea books, like characters from the fourth one, and (I think) a reference to the gebbeth in the first book.
On the subject of books that would make good Ghibli films, I think that the "Old Kingdom" series by Garth Nix would work well as an anime, as it has a great fantasy plot and brilliant characterisation, though it possibly involves death a little much.
Also "the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness" by Michelle Paver, which would have a Princess Mononoke feel to it, and would be really awesome. The only problem is that when it's finished, it'll be over 4 books long...
And just because it's one of the best book series ever, I have to say Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy. I know it wouldn't really suit Ghibli, but since it's being made into a live-action movie, I know Ghibli would make a much better job of it.
Anyway, thanks for making this thread Fruffy! It's good to have a sensible topic for once

I believe that "Orlando" from Virginia Woolf could be an intersting ghibli-movie, because it joins fantastic aspects and historical aspects: the leading character changes her gender and lives for 500 years in England.
And because its one of my fav books...

A fabulous book i only read yesterday was 'The Book Of Lost Things' by John Connelly. It is a fantastic story with lots of hmmm, mythical(?) creatures in it. Like talking wolves, trolls harpies etc. It was also a fantastic read. Part of it is in World War 2 (@ least i think ww 2) so im not sure if Ghibli would b interested in it but anyone just looking for a good read i wuld reccommend. It is very dark tho, Fairy Tales gone bad one might say, it contains all the famous stories like 'Little Red Riding Hood' and twists them quite nastily. Absolutely fabulous tho.

It might be alright. Maybe if Takahata made it, as it seems almost like some weird cross between Pom Poko and GotF. (I know that sounds crazy)

Sounds really good. I might read it at some point.
And even if you think Ghibli might not do it, it still sounds like it could make a good anime.

I like Dragonwings by Lawrence Yep. I think it would make a fine anime film. Or even a live action film.
This novel takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area at the turn of the century. It is the story of a Chinese boy, Moon Shadow (the narrator), who moves to Chinatown to be with his father, Windrider, who is working on a flying machine even as the Wright Brothers are. An historical novel, it depicts not only the lives of and discrimination against San Francisco's Chinese immigrants in the early 1900's, but also the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
There's even a fantasy sequence of sorts where Windrider goes to the Dragon Kingdom.

Hey, I've heard of that author. I was gonna say the Crystal
Door trilogy, but not all the books are published yet
and the second won't come out till summer, but then
I remembered it's the book that lost me in a contest
this summer and I wanna know how the winners
could have been selected already if, cause I checked
the site before the winners where to be announced,
it was the day before..bakas..
And then again, I was trying to imagine it as an anime,
but it just didn't work out. I'd say a live action film, but
I'm angry at the book right now, not the authors.
PS:I try to imagine all the books as an anime as I read them.
So now I've got to remember which ones..hmm..

I would like to take back everything I said about wanting His Dark Materials to be an anime. I want it to be a book. It is and always was a book, so I already have eveything I want.

Personally, I'd rather see original stories than adaptations.
But if anything, I would die to see a movie adaptation of Miyazaki's Shuna no Tabi. Would never see light, I know, but I can dream, right?
Otherwise, maybe I'd like to see the famous japanese novel "I am a cat" adaptation. Haven't personally rwad it, but I heard it's pretty renowned in the literary world.

for once
Oh, um, do you mean Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen? Those are really awesome books, some of my faves. Although I do agree, it would involve death quite a lot, and is pretty morbid....XD

ignoreing the random babble ^^^
i think it would be hard to take a book and do it in anime, yess Howls was good and Earthsea looks good, so i guess it can be done but Goro and Hayao could both come up with fine original ideas.
