Missing dialogue in subs? | |
I dunno if anyone else has noticed this before.
Until a few minutes ago, I've been playing the Mimi DVD on my computer and typing the japanese subs down on notepad, believing the subs to be the same as the movie script itself. It's been barely 10 minutes, and I have already noticed two of Yuuko's lines being butchered.
The first was in Yuuko's first appearance at 7:44. She said, "Aa mou" before the rest of her sentence, bu the subs cut it off, replacing it instead with her name, a common occurence so far in the movie to show who's speaking at the moment. It's just an exclamation, so I thought nothing of it.
However, the second one that occured at 9:38 was worse. It chopped off "to omou yo ne" ("was what I thought" at the end of the sentence. While it didn't really affect the overall meaning to the sentence due to the rest of the sentence being able to imply this, it bugs me to know that they chopped off parts of dialogue when there's more than enough space on screen to include them.
Btw, in case anyone's wondering, mine's the R2 version.

I checked my R2 and have the same omissions. I also have the Animage Film Comic and both are in there.

Both meaning the omissions existing, or not existing?
I watched through the entire film to uncover more omissions. While there are several, the majority of them are forgivable, such as shortening 'no' to 'n', common in japan. I also uncovered two more omissions of exclamation remarks by Nishi Shirou. The first is at 1:13:36 (Sou da) and 1:15:07 (Iya).
But the biggest mistake at 1:14:28. The subs wrote, "Itaria he ikeru koto ni natta nda" (I can go to Italy). But Seiji said it in reverse; "Ikeru koto ni natta nda, Itaria he".
Strange, really. And I was so hoping to be able to capture the script via the subs. Looks like this project's scrapped.

Yeah, that was a bit ambiguous. I meant to say that the Animage comics followed the actual spoken dialog instead of the subtitles. I have seen a couple of minor errors between the books and the actual dialog in other films, but nothing of consequence.
As for the discrepancy with Seiji's dialog, there's no difference between the two--provided the voice inflections are right for each case. "

Considering that I was trying to get the movie's script, it's a pretty big mistake.
Ah well. Next project then.

The best source for the script--other than the actual script--is the storyboards. Miyazaki's handwriting, however, is pretty hard to read (for me at least). The film comics are a good substitute.
