Ghibli features' song lyrics | |
I can recall that at least Spirited Away (Always with me / Itsumo Nando Demo), Laputa (Kimi O Nosete), Porco Rosso (Toki Ni Wa Mukashi Hanashi O) and Kiki (Yashasisha Ni Tsutsumarete Nara) had a vocaled ending song. I'm not so sure of the following:
- Mononokehime
- Nausicaä
- Howl's Moving Castle
- Totoro
- Whisper of the Heart
- Grave of the Fireflies
???
It would be also interesting to see every Ghibli features' lyrics in comparison. The first one to see is SA's Always with Me.
Nausicaa.net:
Always with Me
Somewhere, a voice calls, in the depths of my heart
May I always be dreaming, the dreams that move my heart
So many tears of sadness, uncountable through and through
I know on the other side of them I'll find you
Everytime we fall down to the ground we look up to the blue sky above
We wake to it's blueness, as for the first time
Though the road is long and lonely and the end far away, out of sight
I can with these two arms embrace the light
As I bid farewell my heart stops, in tenderness I feel
My silent empty body begins to listen to what is real
The wonder of living, the wonder of dying
The wind, town, and flowers, we all dance one unity
Somewhere a voice calls in the depths of my heart
keep dreaming your dreams, don't ever let them part
Why speak of all your sadness or of life's painfull woes
Instead let the same lips sing a gentle song for you
The whispering voice, we never want to forget,
in each passing memory always there to guide you
When a miror has been broken, shattered pieces scattered on the ground
Glimpses of new life, reflected all around
Window of beginning, stillness, new light of the dawn
Let my silent, empty body be filled and reborn
No need to search outside, nor sail across the sea
Cause here shining inside me, it's right here inside me
I've found a brightness, it's always with me
Particularly the words touched Miyazaki, which clearly described Chichiro's loneliness. It seems that the usage of symbolic messages is commonly used in Studio Ghibli's works. That's of course a no-brainer, since Ghibli's works are worthy for these kinds of songs.

Almost all the Ghibli films have the ending vocals. Sometimes they are the repetition of the opening songs. And in some of the earlier works there are more than one vocals in each movie.
Nausicaa - nil
Laputa - Kimi wo nosete
Hotaru - nil (/Home Sweet Home?)
Totoro - open: Sampo; end: Tonari no Totoro
Kiki - open: Ryuuju no Dengon; end: Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta nara
Omohide - end: Ai ha Hana, Kimi ha sono Tane
Porco - mid: Sakuranbo no Minoru Koro; end: Toki ni ha Mukashi no Hanashi wo
Umi - end: Umi ni Naretara
PomPoko - Ajia no Kono Machi de; Itsu demo Dareka ga
Whisper - Country Road (open: English version; end: Japanese version)
On Your Mark
Mononoke - Mononoke Hime
Yamada - Hitoribocchi ha Yameta
Sen - Itsumo Nando demo
Neko - Kaze ni Naru
Howl - Sekai no Yakushoku
And here is the lyrics of Mononoke Hime:
Haritsumeta yumi no furueru tsuru yo
The trembling string of a taut bow
Tsuki no hikari ni zawameku omae no kokoro
Your heart is unsettled by the moonlight
Togisumasareta yaiba no utsukushii
The beauty of a sharpened blade
Sono kissaki ni yoku nita sonata no yokogao
Your silhouette, like its keen point
Kanashimi to ikari ni hisomu
The sorrow and anguish
Makoto no kokoro o shiru wa
that your naked heart hides behind
Mori no sei
Only the spirits of the forest know
Mononoke-tachi dake
Only the Mononoke
The lyrics of the earlier songs are even written by Miyazaki, like Kimi wo no sete, Sampo and Tonari no Totoro. In Totoro he wrote a whole lot of songs, while only two were used in the movie. Some of them are still used nowadays, like Chiisana Shashin, used in the Ghibli-produced Japanese Housefood commercial. In Kiki, Miyazaki finally cannot resist to add the songs of his favourite singer (Yumi Arai), and abandoned the fantastic song of Meguru Kisetsu sang by Azumi Inoue (the singer of Kimi wo nosete). Even so, the "theme song" on the maxisingle disc of Kiki is this one instead of any from the movie. Meguru Kisetsu is really quite a match with Kimi wo nosete to be the best Ghibli song should it be included in the movie, and is still one of my favourites.
Ever since Porco, Miyazaki has been considering the feeling of the songs when he makes decision on the selection of the ending vocals. Tokiko Kato, the singer of both vocals in Porco, was a famous chanteuse, and suits the character of Gina, and the atmosphere of the movie very well. Yoshikazu Mera, the singer of Mononoke, is a famous world counter-tenor. It was said that Miyazaki heard his voice on the radio for once, and immediately decided to invite him to sing the song of Mononoke

as you know, in Nausicaa, there are neither Opening vocals nor ending vocals.
but, there is an image song. it was used in TV-CM of the movie at the previous of release.
here is the lyrics of Kaze no tani no Nausicaa.
kin iro no hanabira chirashite
furimukeba mabayui sougen
kumoma kara hikari ga saseba
karada goto chuu ni ukabuno
yasashisa wa mienai tsubasane
tooku kara anata ga yonderu
aishiau hito wa dare demo
tobikata o shitte iru monoyo
kaze no tani no Nausicaa kami o karuku nabikase
kaze no tani no Nausicaa nemuru mori o tobikoe
aozora kara mai oritara
yasashiku tukamaete
hana ya ki ya kotori no kotoba o
anata nimo oshiete agetai
naze hito wa kizutuke auno
shiawase ni koishi o nagete
kaze no tani no Nausicaa shiroi kiri ga haretara
kaze no tani no Nausicaa te to te kataku nigitte
daichi kette tobi tatu noyo
harukana chiheisen
kaze no tani no Nausicaa nemuru mori o tobikoe
aozora kara mai oritara
yasashiku dakishimete

Here is the image song of Kiki, Meguru Kisetsu. Not really a well-known piece of Azumi Inoue, but probably one of her best.
Talking about the Nausicaa image song, is it the one sang by Narumi Yasuda (安田æˆç¾Ž)? I heard sometime ago that there was a "Miss Nausicaa" contest. Yasuda won, and was chose to be the singer of the song. But the song was not all that good and was not used in the movie.
Meguru Kisetsu
"MAJO NO TAKKYUUBIN"
Usubeni Hana keshiki Setsunasa o shitta haru
Hakanaku Shitte yuku Kaze no yubisaki furete
Shizukani Mieru nami Mabushi sugiru natsu no hi
Kokoro no Kaikan de Shiroku kudakete itta
Sugi yuku kisetsu no hate ni Tatazumu hito wa dare na no?
Yureru omoi Jibun o daki shimeta no Hitori
Ashita wa Donna hi ni Houzue no madobe kara
Katachi no Nai yume o Kitto mitsuke ni yukou
Iro zuku Machi yukeba Dareka ni aitai aki
Yasashiku Nare souna Yuugure no samishisa yo
Kogoeta Te no hira de Tokete yuku konayuki wa
Namida ni Yoku niteta Nukumori ni deau fuyu
Shiawase o sagasu hito ga Ichiban shiawase datte
Meguru kisetsu Omoide ni kae nagara Futari
Ashita wa Donna kaze Aruki dasu madobe kara

If you need to know a song for each movie of Ghibli (until Mononoke only) there's a CD titled "20 Years of Studio Ghibli" i believe.... it has collection from Nausicaa to Mononoke.... but only the theme songs, including "On Your Mark" if you ask me the detail about this CD... sorry.. i happen only to have the mp3 version (illegal) so i dont know the cover or any infos about the disc.
Maybe the lyrics included inside the CD booklet... otherwise... buy the original Japanese or other asian version of Ghibli's DVD, it should have lyrics on Japanese subtitles for impaired person.

It is called "Studio Ghibli Songs," which covers the image song of Nausicaa, and the theme songs from Laputa to Mononoke. The re-release added the Yamada theme song. It has a very nice full-colour booklet with the lyrics and pictures of the songs and the movies. Btw the Kiki theme song is the full version, instead of the cut version in the Kiki OST.

Is it a typo for Hisashi to be Jou Hisashi instead of Joe?

The Japanese pronounciation of ä¹…çŸ³è² is Hisaishi Jou, so it is not exactly a typo. But his "official" name is Joe Hisaishi. Anyway, even the name ä¹…çŸ³è² itself is not a real name. It is indeed the "Japanized" version of an English name, Quincy Jones.

let me supplement a little.
"ä¹…" = hisa "石" = ishi "è²"= joe
you can pronounce "ä¹…" as "ku" or "que".
Quincy Jones --> ku-ishi-joe --> "久石è²"
OK?

ON YOUR MARK
Lyrics & Music: Ryo Aska
Arrangement: Sawachika Taisuke
Translation by Aardvark Anime Concerts
Soshite bokurawa itsumo no egaoto sugatade
And we, with smiles on our faces, Brush the dust off of our clothes
Hokorini mamireta fukuo haratta
If our hands should let go, it would not make a sound
Konote wo hanaseba otosae tatenai
A coin dropped, Noiselessly
Ochiteyuku koinwa nidoto kaeranai
Never to return
Kimi to boku narande
You and me, side by side
Yoakeo oinuitemitai jitensha
Racing the dawn on our bicycles
On Your Mark itsumo
On Your Mark, let's go
Hashiri daseba. Hayarino kaze ni yarareta
I always seem to catch the flu that's going around
On Your Mark bokura ga soredemo yamenainowa
On Your Mark We'll never quit
Yumeno shamen miagete ikesohna kigasurukara
We look up the hill of dreams, The crest in in sight
Soshite bokura wa kokoro no, chiisana akichide
And then, In the empty spaces of our hearts
Taganii furiotoshita kotobano yudachi
Shooting each other with a hail of words
Kimi to boku subeteo
We can't say the right thing
Mitomete shimauni wa mada wakasugiru
Like telling time, on a clock with invisible hands,
we're too young to appriciate it, much to our chagrin
On Your Mark itsumo
On Your Mark, let's go
Hashiri daseba. Hayarino kaze ni yarareta
I always seem to catch the flu that's going around
On Your Mark bokura ga soredemo yamenainowa
On Your Mark We'll never quit
Yumeno shamen miagete ikesohna kigasurukara
We look up the hill of dreams, The crest in in sight
Soshite bokura wa
And Then
On Your Mark, itsumo
On Your Mark, let's go
Hashiri daseba hayarino kaze ni yarareta
I always catch the flu that's going around
On Your Mark bokura ga soredemo yamenaino wa
On Your Mark We can't lose this one
Yumenoshamen miagete ikesohna kigasurukara
Because our hearts are called together as one
On Your Mark
Get, Set, Go
Soshite bokurawa
And Then........

AM I DOING THIS RIGHT??? THIS IS MY FIRST THREAD.
Hi everyone...My name's Sama
i found this on a page where some students and a teacher talked about the differences between nausicaä and The Angel from the Cage & Aska's On your mark...
http://utd500.utdallas.edu/~hairston/nau...cture_3_p1.html
i hope you like it...i realy don't care about the texts...i love the music and pictures ofcrse and the song's about nausicaäs return at a diffrent time and place (right )
Then we are there with our smile and form as usual. And we brush away dust.
As we let a coin go out of my hand, it fall without clink. And we cannot catch it never again.
I will try to overtake the dawn with you by our bicycles.
On your mark.
Whenever we start on, we always catch a prevalent cold.
On your mark.
The reason we don't give up is that we feel we can go up the slope to lead our hope.
Then we talk out together, like the words shower fall to our blank space in our minds.
It is an answer that we do not answer.
It is finding a time to see the face of a clock without hands.
We are too young to appreciate all of together.
On your mark.
Whenever we start on, we always catch a prevalent cold.
On your mark.
The reason we don't lose it, is to encourage together to point toward our heart of hopes.
Then we are..
On your mark.
Whenever we start on, we always catch a prevalent cold.
On your mark.
The reason we don't give up is that we feel we can go up the slope to lead our hope.
On your mark.
Whenever we start on, we always catch a prevalent cold.
On your mark.
The reason we don't lose it, is to encourage together to point toward our heart of hopes.
Then, where we will go?

Hi Sama the Ghost, welcome for joining us . I wonder how can a ghost use a computer? Wouldn't your fingers go right through the keyboard when you try to hit the keys?
The angel (or the winged girl) of On Your Mark and Nausicaa is really quite an interesting comparison. Both have a lot of similarities, but also some significant differences. One of them is that the girl is quite passive indeed (except for her attempt of grasping the cops when falling onto the ground), which is very different from most other Miyazaki girls.
For the song of Spirited Away (Always with me), it is said that the song was not originally written for Chihiro's story. I think Miyazaki had initially wanted to create a movie about a teenage girl called Lin, and someone voluntarily wrote the song. The whole project later changed into the story of Chihiro. I wonder how similar is this original Lin and the one in the movie.
btw Nanashi thanks for the lyrics of Sekai no Yakushoku.
Here is one of the most famous theme songs of the Ghibli movies, Kimi o nosete.

The horizon is shining because
it hide you somewhere.
when I see a lot of lights,
I feel dear because
you are in one of them.
Let's go out,
packing a bag with a piece of bread,
a knife, and a lamp.
This burning will that my father gave me.
That look that my mother gave me.
The earth is spining, hiding you.
The eyes are shining, and the lights are twinkling.
The earth is spining, putting on you;
putting on us who shall meet each other someday.
This burning will is that my father remain for me.
That look is that my mother gave me.
The earth is spining, hiding you.
The eyes are shining, and the lights are twinkling.
The earth is spining, putting on you:
putting on us who shall meet each other someday.
