I know I've said this many times but there is great stuff all through the Monogatari series. The Nadeko and Hitagi stories at the end are... so good. Even the OP of the Hitagi chapter had the fans raving like loons, me among them. You'll see why when you get there. Its just... so very clever.
Watching Monogatari just makes me come away feeling more clever!

I haven't seen the earliest parts in a long time now, but I'd agree on the two stories just mentioned now. Another one of my favourites is Suruga Devil.
By the way, did you see that Owarimonogatari will continue this summer? It's been a while since the last regular series.

I need to catch up with the whole franchise. There's a couple of the recent 4-ep/long movie sets I haven't seen.
Pleased to hear the main series will be continuing, its refreshing to find an anime that is a bit off mainstream that makes enough money for the studio to continue with it.

Hmmm... I'd disagree with putting Shirobako in the "cute girls do workplace" category. Shirobako is actually a pretty gender-equal show, with the ensemble being about half boys and half girls. Otherwise, yeah, those are pretty spot-on. Although I will still declare my love for Azumanga Daioh!

I wouldn't agree with writing off that entire list based on the description at the top. First, their idea of it seems so broad that it includes things I'd never call "cute girls doing cute things". Apart from that, there are also several on there that I'd recommend.

Yes, quite a lot of good anime in there. Some rubbish of course, but its not all bad.
Also, wrong thread. This is a "what you are watching thread".

Nothing. In fact, that's why I am here, looking for stuff to watch.
I did try one punch and, while hilarious, the comedy anime is not my cup of tea.
I did try another, and finished it in one sitting over night, yet I can't say it was really good. EDIT: in fact, let me say something here, Spoiler!, highlight to read.
they did great job at the build-up, but failed miserably in the end. instead of making the characters solve the mystery of the extra person through analysis or maybe some experiments, they made this girl literally SEE the extra person and, to compensate for this weak move, they drowned the school in the blood of innocent. what kind of sssstory is this?? like, I was fine with them using deaths to put pressure on characters, but to slay them for pretty much no reason? nope, nope, nope. |
I did like aki no kanade, as per above, yet it's only 25 minutes I would be happy to sit through 2 hours of it, but there is no such option.
Still trying to avoid series, but it seems like there is less and less choice left.

Worth watching in the above Cute Girls list:
Azumanga Daioh (a classic comedy series)
Tari Tari
Girls und Panzer (very high quality production values and animation and a very fun premise)
Hibike! Euphonium (KyoAni; you need no other reason to watch it)
Haibane Renmei (IMHO up there in the top 50 anime ever made, its that good)
Hanasaku Iroha (solid slice of life stuff)
Nichijou (worth watching for the insanity of it all)
Sasameki Koto
Strawberry Panic! (a classic of the genre)
Rolling Girls (very good animation)
Flip Flappers

I haven't watched it so I couldn't comment, I listed only the ones I'd seen and thought were worth a mention.

I'd agree on most of what's been mentioned, though I haven't seen all of Saddles's list. Apart from that, Dirty Pair is worth watching, but really doesn't fit into the category at all, and Little Witch Academia is very good too.
I've also seen all of the "arthouse" section and several of the "suffering" section. I'd say the "arthouse" ones are all good to some degree, but I did end up disappointed by Rolling Girls. Apart from Madoka Magica, the "suffering" series are a bit of a mixed bag. Gakkougurashi has more "cute girls doing cute things" elements, but mainly for the sake of contrast with the heavier storyline. It's worth a shot for the mood shifts and twists, but the others in that section let me down a bit.

Idk how did I get here, but this conversation is either too funny, or that's wine 🍷that I had earlier
edit: ok, now that I'm sober - this noragami thing is a mess, almost feels like the writers make things up as they go with no plan or anything. you would expect them to follow some manga, but maybe they do, and manga artist was making things up along the way with no plan or anything. I hate series as a genre, being time-consuming for no good reason, and I hate this particular series for crappy story.
Spoiler!, highlight to read.
also, somewhere in the middle of it you do not get to see any 'real' life of that girl any more, it's like following that god around consumes all of her time. a lot of things that never led to anywhere, like her tail said to be her weakness, and noone is trying to use it then, not even once. some random gods angry at our god for things... well, just forget it, they won't tell why. what else? all the things just happen 'deus ex machina' style. oh, they took her memories? not a problem, she will just magically remember it all. the weapon boy has a conflict with god that needs to be somehow solved? duh, just perform magic on him, and we're done. you want the rules of the world to be consistent and related to each other? sucks to be you. |

Some people here might be interested that the second part of Owarimonogatari is finally on. It's airing a little oddly, as a few episodes bunched into 40-minute blocks on consecutive nights, so it works out at about the length of the OVAs. I think one more episode is still to air tonight, but I'm a bit confused by it really.
Anyway, I've watched three-quarters of it so far and it's another good instalment! The next bit should wrap up most of what's happened up until now.
Did anyone here watch the Kizumonogatari films?

If I have to say, the art style definitely makes it stand out, but the story... Idk if it could be better, but it sure does not warrant a trilogy. Everything that happens there could fit in 1 hour. In fact I only watched it all because I came to know about it shortly before 3rd movie was released, if I were to come across it at the times of bakemonogotari series, I would probably never watch it.
Oh, and these annoying coka cola ads...

The product placement is a joke, like much of the content in most of the Bakemonogatari series, its self-referencing humour. Do you see the joke in the subtitle as well? Combined with the animation of the liquid ejecting from the bottle? All basic double-entendre. There are three separate jokes in that single frame. This is one reason I like the Bake franchise. Its just so damn clever
The extremely long drawn out scenes and conversations are two things - first a decision to follow Nisio Isin's structure in which long convoluted and humorous conversations are a feature of his books and second to deliberately go against most conversations and scenes in contemporary anime which are extremely abrupt. I recall Nisemonogatari had a conversation that lasted an entire 25 minute episode and it would have been possible for a different director with different intentions to either entirely remove that conversation or reduce it to about 30 seconds. Isin's work is very different and Shaft are to be congratulated in treating his work in a manner that shows up these differences.
Quite a few people think there is fan service in all the series but again that is all self-referencing and intentional. If you study the scenes in which the "fan service" happens you'll see that in fact none of it is fan service (because fan service by definition serves no purpose but to titillate) whereas the mild porn in Bake has a story function. Its another joke.
I admit of course that the Bakemonogatari franchise has made Shaft a great deal of money in DVD and other sales so one could claim they are just using it now to make more money but in this case I think such reward is deserved. I'm happy to see such an artfully made franchise succeed in a world where usually most money making anime are pretty dire.
I have only watched the first film so far. My main criticism of it was the change in animation style and artwork. The main characters are drawn noticeably differently to all the other TV series which I found off-putting in the case of Araragi and Heart-Under-Blade and the over-use of 3D CGI I found jarring and unnecessary.

I'd agree that the actual story of Kizumonogatari doesn't really warrant three films. But then again, the whole thing is, in a sense, fanservice. It's an adaptation that was skipped years ago and hinted at several times since, so when they finally did it, they deliberately made it a huge thing.
I think the third one is very good, since it actually gets to wrap up its story. They're all fun to watch as a fan of the series, but I don't think they'd make a good introduction. The visuals have a different, exaggerated style, and the number of characters is limited. The original Bakemonogatari is a better place for a new viewer to start, in my opinion.
