29th of July, GEDO SENKI PREMIERES, HAYAO MIYAZAKI DECLINES MEMBERSHIP OF THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES: Today Gedo Senki has officially been released nationwide in cinemas across Japan. Also, Hayao Miyazaki has declined to being a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. Details can be found over here:

Standard-issue American review about Ghibli. I see that this writer has pulled out the "Miyazaki Retirement" bit again. I remember reading Steve Alpert (the int'l liason at Ghibli, and formerly of Disney many eons ago) on a French website, completely frustrated that Western media constantly harps about Miyazaki's imminent retirement. Haven't they figured out that man is going to die at his desk? "Retire" isn't an option, kids.
I wouldn't worry. Thanks to the magic of the internets, someone is bound to dump a subtitled bootleg on of these weeks. My only hope is that the movie is successful enough for Lasseter to put pressure on Disney for a theatrical release in the US. I don't want to wait until 2009 for the DVD.

This is what "Sekai no Mannaka no Ki" looks like for those who don't know it. Anybody who has read it?

When I saw this, my first thought was that it was Miyazaki's. Aside from the fact there isn't 10 panels on each page, the layouts are strongly suggestive of his work. Clearly the author was influenced by Miyazaki's films.
Of course, everything is all speculation at this point. I do remember Toshio Suzuki suggesting (after Howl was released) that Miyazaki's next movie should be a children's film, one aimed at the grandkids. He hasn't made a picture for the very young audience (apart from the museum shorts) for a very long time, and Howl probably cleared his plate for his darker and more personal elements.
So, at this point, that's what I'd expect. We'll all find out in December, anyway. Now if we can get Takahata to wrap up the endless research and get to work on his next film...

I'd love to see Miyazaki-san do another childhood-oriented film, like Totoro or Kiki, but I'd also love to see another slapstick film like Animal Treasure Island or Cagliostro. Hopefully, he's still got a few years left  .
As for Takahata, I haven't yet seen Winter Days, but he really should make another film -- it's a shame that there hasn't been a 'realistic' Ghibli film in quite a while (except for Ghiblies Ep. 2, and that may be a bit of a stretch). Maybe he'll just write the screenplay and draw the storyboards while someone like Osamu Tanabe or Yoshiyuki Momose directs, due to his age. Who knows?

For those not familiar with Makiko Futaki, she did the key animation for Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Pom Poko, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and the original art for My Neighbor Totoro.

It's intriguing to see that the publisher is Tokuma Shoten. That would make a very cozy relationship between all the parties if this is, indeed, the story being considered.
