This is an issue that has been popping up everywhere, getting people angry, getting people big bucks, and putting people out of work.
The whole, hand-drawn vs computer generated battle is reaching it's climax.
I heard Disney's last hand drawn film ever is 'Home on the Range'
I'm not just worried about Disney, but the question of the extinction of traditional 2D animation is what scares me. I want to be an animatior.
With all these CG films taking over, my job opertunities are getting slim.
I have faith in Miyazaki though. I mean come on...highest grossing film in Japanese history...done in 2D. That has to tell you something.
I want to know what yall think about this.
I've read a LOT of opinions, but I'd like more.
Will 2D die and CG films take over? Or is there still hope?
I don't know about yall, but i'm getting tired of 3D films..they all seem the same to me.-----Sio

i dont think handdrawn animations will ever died... ppl will become more and more tired of 3d movies as they come to perfection and look excactly like live action... then we'll demand handdrawn again and go backwards

That's kind of what i was thinking too. And even if it does die in the US...there will be jobs for me in Miyazaki's country!^_^--Sio

I doubt that 2D will die out, however, I do think that it will become rarer and rarer on the big screen. I don't think 3D will overtake cartoons on television as it's more expensive than traditional animation techniques.

U dont have to BEG for replies, u know.
Asking, do u have ANY idea at all how much CG they used in the last 3 ghibli movies? 2D sint dying, theyre juz used in conjunction with CG to produce better animation.

Well you don't have to be rude about it. I know how much 2D is out there. And I know that it's integrated with CG to look better. I'm trying to get more people talking in this group. It's a great forum and I'd like to see more done with it. Sheesh---Sio

As long as people want to see their drawings come to life, 2D will not die.

If you mix 2D with 3D, though, it looks kinda rubbish.

The thing is though, it's usually regarded as "pioneering" and only XIII actually shows a huge level of creativity.

U havent watched a lot of anime then. Quite a few titles combine both. Most notable is Last Exile, one of the best anime in recent years.

I dont think 2D will die out. If it did that would be horrible! I dont see how people couldent like it, I mean just look at how beautiful the forest in princess mononoke looks in 2D. In 3D it wouldent be nearly as impresive.

Traditional animation will not die....its just not being used for big theatrical movies by disney.
Dont forget the "winnie the pooh" films are still traditionally done.
What amuses me is that just because disney corp decides to abandon traditional animation in favour of 3d cg that everyone will follow suit.
Disney choice of this is a financial one....they only there to make money and do little for the art movement nowadays.
There are loads of animators/studios worldwide that will continue to use traditional techniques.
Im a traditionalist at heart...and am making my own film traditionally...I loath flash...its cheap...looks cheap & is lazy.
Biggest problem of late though is traditional training....if theres no one to teach it will die out.
Watching documentaries on Bambi...listening to animators who are making a naff straight to vid sequel...they are desperatly trying to recreate the work of the old masters but are failing because the lack of skill in comparison to the old artists.
More animators are are being trained using vector based programs and 3D cg...rather than putting pen to paper on a light box.
I have a friend whos currently doing a digital arts & animation course...and shes never once been taught to animate by hand.....THATS disturbing.
Q & A,Tutorial sessions with animator richard williams are always fuly booked because there are so many animators who want this training. It helps to get a hands on understanding of principles of animation.
As for combining 3D with traditional...it works well when done well.
Look at howls....what strikes me in howls..because of the cheapness of using digitally painted cels Ghibli have upped the frame count and the trad animation is the best they've produced yet.
So technology has its advantages.
All in all as there are those who still have the determination and love for traditional and go out to do it...then it will never die.
If it goes underground....it will always be there...waiting.

I agree...however, you can't be totally biased against CG animation. I mean, look at South Korea's animated film My Beautiful Girl, Mari--though 3D-generated, it is unlike any other computer animated films ever made, resembling hand-drawn animation but much fluider. Also, it's got an excellent, Only Yesterday-like story.

I think 2D animation will always have its value because it is such a unique form of storytelling. When I was growing up in the 90s there were a lot of really good 2D animated movies coming out. Maybe our generation will be able to bring that back.

There is a nice article about Disney, Pixar and Ghibli that has a touch of this issue. A very good quote:
"Everyone, sadly including Disney, is trying to copy Pixar's success by going 100 percent computer animation... No one in the top offices has figured out that Pixar's secret is not the computer graphics, but, rather, the fact that they focus on the stories first and foremost, and let the cool computer stuff take care of itself."
