Hello SugarCubes and welcome to the Tavern. Great forum name! I hope you stick around as this is a very friendly place. I haven't heard any talk of a sequel and Miyazaki/Ghibli are famous for not doing sequels of any kind, unlike many American and British animated movie companies which like to milk a franchise for every penny in it. Miyazaki has always said he prefers to put his energy into a new project rather than add to an old one.
On the whole I think its unlikely we'll see another Borrowers based Ghibli movie. Miyazaki's own manga Nausicaa was a much longer story than the movie but he never made a second film, despite having plenty of material for one. Tales of Earthsea was also taken from a sequence of books and no sequel to that came about so, no, I think you're out of luck.

I'd say it's very unlikely. It was by a new director and they don't generally do sequels, so I'd be surprised. Sorry about that!

I would agree that a sequel is unlikely. However, comparatively speaking, I think Arrietty is more likely to receive a sequel than any other Ghibli movie. I say that because: (1) Arrietty was a huge hit in Japan, and made even more money than Kaze Tachinu internationally, (2) lately Ghibli has been kind of on the rocks financially, and (3) Miyazaki and Takahata are both probably retired for good now.
When Miyazaki's gone, his no-sequel policy isn't going to have much bearing on the company's decisions. I could see Ghibli attempting a sequel to a successful movie if they felt it would keep the studio afloat. Once again, not saying this is likely, just that it's within the scope of reason.

Those are good points Orphic. I had forgotten that the 'no sequels' policy was a personal issue for Miyazaki. When he hands his company over to younger directors we may see changes in all kinds of ways.
When a motion picture company buys the screen rights from a book author there's always tightly worded contracts in place and a standard agreement would almost certainly give the movie people options on a sequel or prequel using the authors material, so it might be the case that things are in place and its just personal decisions that need to be made.

Strictly speaking, Ghibli HAS made sequels. Giblies 2 was one, Mei and the Kitten Bus was another

They weren't theatre releases though, they were shorts. I think the original question was about another full length Arietty/Borrowers sequel, not a short.

Yeah, those examples aren't really sequels in the same way. Ghiblies is just a short thing, and I'd say Mei and the Kitten Bus is more of a spin-off really, since its format is different.

Husky is correct. Even at the Ghibli Museum, there's no way of seeing the other shorts apart from the one you get to see that day. I found that frustrating because I want to be able to see them all and hoped there'd be a DVD or something.
Please don't watch the clip from that channel, because it's a badly filmed video from the cinema room in the Museum, where even still photographs aren't allowed.

I'm wondering if anyone has any details about this? Like i've hard about this before but no details. Why is ghibli in financial trouble?
