(If I couldn't that I couldn't watch all the anime and read all the manga there are translated into english, in Denmark there is almost NOTHING anime and manga, the first anime there where in the biographs was Spririted away)
I would just say to all them who come from USA and japan, that they are so lucky because you can get so much anime and manga.. *sigh*
In my opinion you are the lucky one.
I'm from England, as I said above, and can get my hands on lots of animé and manga. But you can speak two languages, and that's magic.
Well, not magic like Howl. My old English teacher (who came from Sweden) speaks 7 languages and she said "Language is power". Unfortunately, I can only speak English fluently, but I can speak some French. I began learning French four years ago, and am taking my GCSE French in a couple of weeks.
I would give all the animé and manga in the world to be able to speak many languages fluently. *Sigh*
By the way, I adore the pictures at the bottom of your post

The easiest way to learn English is to watch lots of movies and TV.
No, really
Anyway Phyrra, knowing two languages isn't that big a deal really, a very large number of the world's population are bilingual. Take my country, where at least 70% are bilingual.
Me? Hoping to be a trilinguist soon. If I ever manage to learn enough vocab for japanese, that is

Yes, it is a big deal!
Just think. There are so many people in the world who don't speak English. I will never be able to get to know them, never be able to understand famous texts in their original language, never understand so many other cultures ~ in general, miss out on most of the world.
I mentioned the quotation earlier "Language is power" ~ and it completely is. For without language, what are we? Without language we will never be able to project thoughts.
I suppose in Singapore, 70% of people may be bilingual, but I'm not. And I bet only a small percentage of the world is. I can understand quite a bit of French, more than enought to get by in France ~ but that's not enough...
Language connects us to everyone else. If one can only speak one language ~ one can only truely understand one 'collection' of people. But those who can speak more than one, can understand so much more of the world ~ and the opportunities that arise from understanding other 'collections' of people, are infinite in greatness.

Phyrra:
i have been learning english since i was in kindergarten which is about 3 or 4. I mean, everyone in hongkong get to learn english when they are in kindergarten. I start to study in N.Ireland when i was in first year and now i am in fifth year. In my school, i was forced to learn french as well, i find it hard. i am glad that i don't have to learn it no more. i know learning french probably will do me some good but really, i find it so hard. i agree with you, learning more than one language will probably do your own good and means you can understand more. I wish i am good at french! English is an international language, which most of us will know, but in poor countries-LEDCs the chance for them to learn english is not high. Language is one of the most amazing thing. even though there are hundreds of languages in the world but there was only one language to begin with. How amazing it is for us to invent all these languages!

Speaking from experience here, one shouldn't talk about learning a foreign language as a future task. Your ability to learn a new tongue deteriorates rapidly with age. So, don't talk about it--do it. Now is a good time, but yesterday would have been better.
In my opinion, starting to learn a foreign language in middle school (which appears to be the standard in much of the world) is pretty late in life. Nothing is too late (unless you want to count death as a factor), but the longer it's put off, the harder the task and the less satisfying the result.

Surprisingly though, that age barrier doesn't apply to everyone in general. Some people can master languages quite late in life.
@Phyrra: Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, HongKong and America are a few of the countries that widely practises bilingual education. And forget English, the most widely used language in the world is Mandarin; English is 2nd.
And I'll be glad to partake any new info on Japanese, but the problem isn't with the language; it's my memory. It's leakier than a sieve.

If you are getting down to sheer numbers, then I believe you will find more people in the world who can READ English than can read simplified Chinese--given the approximate level of literacy on the mainland is around 25 percent. As a practical matter, a person from a third country would have far many more doors open for him if he were to learn English, French, or Japanese than if he learned Chinese. The reason for this is that virtually everything of importance ever written in any language has been translated into one or more of the aforementioned languages. Chinese political doctrine tends to limit the availability of foreign thought--or any thought incompatable with socialism.
About age: Research has proven that age is an extremely significant factor affecting the ability to learn new languages. While it is definitely true that an older person can become functional in a new language, the nature of the learning process is different. With age, learning any topic starts evolving from the ability to absorb large amounts of random information to the ability to apply select facts which are relevant.
