Yep, from hearing it pronounced on some DVDs (can't remember which ones though), it's definitely with a "j".

Up until that point, I was mistakenly pronouncing it with a "g", like "giblet" or "give".

"Ghibli" seems to be Italian. it seems to be pronounced "g" in Italy.
in Japan, we pronounce it "j". but "Ghiblies" (2000/2002) is "g".

Yeah I watched commercials and it's pronounced...with a "J".

well, once I read that Miyazaki-sensei him self sais that GHIBLI supposed to be pronounced as GHIBLI with a G.
I think it's just the Japanesse who can't say G like in gesture. they would rather say J than to a G.

It's pronounced with a 'J' because the spelling for Studio ghibli actually reads "Sutajio Jiburi" (note the J there).

Never did find out why it was spelled as 'JI" instead of "GI" for the Ghibli word in the first place.

According to the 'Birth of Ghibli' featurette on the Disney released Nausicaa DVD, it is indeed pronounced "Jibli". Strictly speaking, however, the pronouciation"Gibli" is not incorrect.

As rurito mentioned, Miyazaki intended the company name to be spoken in this way. He borrowed the word "Ghibli" from an italian aircraft (pronounced Gib-li in Italian), which also means "hot air blowing over the Sahara Desert". It was meant to symbolise the impact his company would have on the anime industry.

Suzuki then explains that Miyazaki made a mistake (!!!!) since without spelling alteration, "Ghibli" in Japanese can only be pronounced 'Jib-li'. Yet Suzuki claims that since 'Jib-li' is unique and "no one else in the world uses it", he agreed to Miyazaki's selection.

Therefore its not such a weird question after all; at one point, even people inside the company we unsure what to call there workplace (lol).

P.S. Perhaps this explains why the animated shorts "Ghiblies 1 and 2" are actually pronounced 'Gib-lees'.
