Tales From Earthsea BooksPost Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for Posts by shiawase Report Post to a Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

I've done some research and found the four Earthsea novels which, I assume, are closely related to Goro Miyazaki's film coming this summer. I would like to know if they're worth reading and whose read them.

I have yet to read them, but Goro talks about them in the first 9 pages of his blog (translated here -http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/earthsea/blog/). From his writings they sound very interesting and pretty philosophical too.

The movie will apparently centre around Book 3, but the title is collective (taken from the latest book) so will draw on other books from the series too. Judging from his interest in Book 1 (and the impact it has had on him), I believe it too will play a prominent role in the making movie -if not directly, then indirectly through his interpretations on it. Not sure about the latter titles though, he doesn't seem to have read those.

P.S. - Just to let you know I think there are a total of 6 books in the series (according to Goro at least, p1) - I believe they are "A Wizard of Earthsea", "The Tombs of Atuan", "The Farthest Shore", "Tehanu", "The Other Wind: An Earthsea Novel" and "Tales from Earthsea: Short Stories" (although this may not exactly follow on as part of the series).

Shiawase, you've come to the right place! The Earthsea series is my favorite series, and yes, it is most definetely worth reading!!!! Ursula K LeGuin is the best living fantasy storyteller in the West, Miyazaki in the East. That Studio Ghibli and Earthsea have come together is phenomonal! Hayao had tried to get Ursula to let him make an Earthsea movie, but it never panned out. Now she's letting Goro do it! Anyway, I'm rambling, but I go on in detail about the books in the Gedo Senki trailer thread right here in this forum, you should check it out. I love these books and I've read all six of them at least twice. I say go for it!

Great, let us know what you think of them. I may read them during the summer.

Oh and don't blame us if you don't like 'em .

My local library has The Earthsea Quartet: a compilation of the four novels. So I will begin to read them and If I like them THAT much then I shall purchase them. Therefore I can't blame you if I don't like them. Although I have a feeling that if Goro Miyazaki is making an anime about it and Studio Ghibli has been trying to get the rights for years now I can only assume I will like it. Nanimo fuan janai. No worries.

Which may be a good thing, although I doubt he didn't.

The only problem with novel adaptations is when the director tries to squeeze everything into a normal-sized movie. Like Harry potter, whose sequels are getting from bad to worse, with LOTR on the other side of the coin, with very good pacing and character development.

Oh?! Really? That's quite a comment to make... I don't agree, but seeing as I've only read the first of her Earthsea quartet, I can't really comment too much...

Sometimes I think her plot wasn't very deep, and she didn't explore a wide variety of themes in detail... that's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact, that style leands itself to a film very well.

In my opinion, I perfer there to be lots of exploration of themes and emotions, in great detail. I also like action, which Le Guin writes very well. She was an early fantasy author, and since her quartet, fantasy has moved on. I like the 'new' age of fantasy we're in now, as opposed to the 'old' fantasy of Tolkein and Le Guin...

I did enjoy her novel, though. When I finish reading 'Tanequil' by Terry Brooks, I might get round to finishing Le Guin's quartet... Terry Brooks is the best living fantasy storyteller in the West , Le Guin isn't far behind... she is amazing too!

Yeah all fantasy are good, I dunno who could be classified as BEST but meh.. LOTR was good, movie and book. I can only imagine the same for Earthsea.
