in the case it was taken as a valid argument that anime (broadly with associated things) has an effect over human mind.
Except that the Wiki article itself dismisses that idea. The man was clearly badly damaged mentally long before he discovered anime/porn/horror movies/whatever silly reason his detractors tried to give.

To be honest Saviour I too don't want those kinds of things posted here (or linked to, however you want to wriggle about it). The world is full of evil, cruelty, bad people, suffering and pain. Please don't link such awful articles to us. We know the world sucks. I don't want to come to my favourite web forum and be reminded of that.

And generally when some respectfully asks you to edit your post and remove a link because they find it upsetting its the polite and decent thing to do it.

And leaving to to Roar's decision is we all know pointless since Roar doesn't delete things.

I'll ask too. Please edit your post and remove the link. Thank you.

No no no no no no he was the centre of a massive media panic that sensationalised the incident to treat anime fans as a scapegoat for all of Japan's social problems.

What Arren said. It had nothing to do with anime..

I'm that strange person who has already read that article a number of times because I spend too much time looking up strange and unusual murders for hours..

this was another reason why i posted it, i think i agree with arren too that indeed this case was used as an excuse against anime while it should have been appropriate to address the real social problem [treating disabled people respectfully, bullying in school etc]

but in my opinion anime actually made the guy visualize, that was the cause of the media panic, and i think thats also correct. i am always against anime's bizarreness, i dont find any possible reason why anime viewers should have any fetish at all.

link removed as i myself find the link disturbing in the this forum, but i will really watch myself when watching anime

Saviour - thanks for removing the link.

I think the Japanese media hyped this case up just like the right-wing media in the USA likes to hype up violent shooter video games every time the police find one in the apartment of someone involved with gun crime.

I personally refuse to see that tasteless video of almost all kinds is a push factor for these cases. Its a pull factor instead. What I mean is the poor soul who is in trouble is already in need of help before he finds satisfaction in violent games or porn; it isn't the violent games or porn that starts him down the path in need of help.

The simple truth of this statement can be found everywhere you look in the world around you. Millions and millions of people watch pornography or play violent/sexual video games. If they really were the causal factor some media like to proclaim they are the world would have far more people in it similar to the person in this case.

Don't worry too much about finding distasteful things in 95% of anime. If you watch mainstream anime you won't come across anything worse than fanservice. I agree this is female exploitation/sexualization and is wrong but you won't come across anything darker or more disturbing. There is some pretty nasty anime out there in the hentai section, but if you just avoid that classification you won't see anything bad.

Just a comment and an 'atta boy'...

Has anyone else noticed how much saviour's English has improved over the 3+ years he has been a member of the Tavern? I think that it is quite commendable and gives a new sub-title for the Tavern...

"School of English for the Non-native Speaker"

Way to go, saviour!

i certainly did

tavern is one reason definitely, it is the second place where i have written large essays on things[...][and i loved that], another important reason is my university[where the medium is english]. before university i studied in Bangla medium in junior and high school.

however when i look at my older posts i can not but laugh, i was quite different back then.

the most important thing that tavern has done for me is the fact that it let me socialize with real foreign people. thats something extremely rare for site.

You didn't know it was based on "facts"? That's what makes the series so cool, you can imagine its real in many ways, or the theories are.

YAY

I, for one, believe John Titor's theory. I think it makes more sense then a lot of other time travel theories.

Also, Husky's pun made my day.

this one looks[the concept] like Ghost in the shell to me

[i think internet cafes are same in all countries cause ours looks almost exactly like that]
[on a side note there is a interesting campaign in my country to make people interested to go study and work in japan due to its population crisis, i will probably never go to japan for that reason, it[overworking] will freak the hell out of me]
[on a further side note you can read this http://disposableworkers.com]

Nice find, and a great person. Sometimes we take for granted inventions that save hundreds of lives daily without considering who came up with such a seemingly obvious, but at the time, revolutionary idea first.

Rather than honouring chiefs of industry, pop stars and footballers, our societies need to honour people such as Ms McCarroll.

Percy Shaw of Halifax, England is another person we really should thank every day on our roads:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_eye_%28road%29

He really did get the idea from seeing a cat's eyes at night.

I like your 'Cats-eyes' better than the simple 'Botts-dots' that we have here in the States. Far, far better, either one, than simple lane stripes. We have an especially unsafe, IMO, freeway curve here a few miles from where I live that is especially dangerous, again IMO. There are five lanes in all going around the curve and they are only marked with stripes!!! They had the Botts-dots at one time, but they have worn off (only glued on, more or less). and what doesn't help is that there is a pavement separation between two strips of pavement that catches the eye in the #2 and #3 lanes going around the curve and you have a tendency to follow it rather than the faded stripes!!! At least I do, and I've been driving it for decades!!! I have to fight the urge every time I drive it. And when it raining???!!! Forget it, you can't hardly see the stripes!!!

I've complained, but never received an answer...

One idea I like that they came up with is using the blue Botts-dots to indicate a fire hydrant. When you see a blue 'Botts' in the center of the road, to one side or the other, that is where the hydrant is located. A helpful indicator at night, I'm sure.
