Representatives from Hokusei Gakuen in Sapporo, Hokkaido came to give a presentation at the university today. It looks such a nice university! And a lovely city and area too. Living costs seem very reasonable too, dormitories right beside campus, easy flights to other cities... I'm tempted. I hadn't really considered going to university in Hokkaido as it's so far from most of the other major cities, but it looks much more of a possibility now. Hmm, I'd like to hear from some of the other universities too. I had Nagoya and Kanda in mind.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Oh wow that sounds amazing......I don't know your story but these possibilities sound great! I'm from Canada and I'm also a university student. Although, I've never lived in a residence for it- I'm not sure if you live other there or not (or possibly, now you do). But yeah...totally check out your options and maybe make a pros and cons chart?

At least we found out one thing that's wrong with me, I'm anemic. Still waiting on my stomach though. The wait is honestly, killing me. My meds only help for a little while too...

I'm really happy to have such great teachers here. It's funny, the impression I had of my Japanese teacher for this year was that she was good but a little strict and scary. She had kind of an intimidating air. Turns out she is an excellent teacher, and she's also incredibly sweet, kind and funny. A friend of mine was having real confidence issues in the first weeks and was thinking of moving to a different class, but the teacher talked things over with them and has been quietly encouraging them since then, and they're feeling much better about things now. Our course leader for Asia-Pacific Studies is pretty stellar as well; he's doing everything to support us and he's really friendly and down-to earth, makes his classes fun.

Last year was good but I'm definitely enjoying this one more.

My language arts/English teacher last year was amazing and might just be my favorite teacher I've ever had. My Spanish teacher this year definitely gives her a run for her money, though. She's teaching me so much and I've never had so much fun in a class or picked up the material THIS FAST. She's a great teacher.

Sorry, but I just had to

I just watched a Charlie Chaplin(first time) movie. which led me to read his biography on the internet.

it seems that although he was a excellent actor some controversy about his political(in some case personal) life was very popular which led to boycott his films in america. I understand what the internet says. however what it does not say is how he was portrayed in people's mind in that time

@husky and saddle

please can you try to remember if you knew charlie chaplin in the 1950-1965 timeline? how were the views on him then? can you please enlighten on the issue. Do you think your views are different now? if so how? why?

it is a great curiosity of mine and will be a important source material in the internet as tavern is searchable by the search engines. i think the art majors might also have some interest in the material.

thank you.

First of all, as a child in the 50's, I had no interest in politics, I was interested in playing with my friends and later taking care of my sister. I did watch a good deal of TV (when we had one) and laughed at Charlie Chaplin's comedy style. He, the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello among others were the fun things to watch at the time.

Later, as an older teen and young adult, I read about Chaplin's politics, but again not having much interest in politics, I was more interested in his comedy than anything about him. I remember reading about him having communist leanings, but didn't think much about it. I had also come to ignore most sensationalistic news about entertainers. I had other, more personal things to think about.

As a result of my age and indifference, I thankfully missed out on all the "Red Scare" and the "Commies are coming" hysteria with the Macarthy era trials, etc, that a lot of entertainers were put through. The only thing I really remember was the 'Duck and Cover' drills we went through and the occasional air raid warning sirens. (not every area had them..

Sorry if I couldn't be more helpful, savour.

This is an example of the 'Duck and Cover drills we had in the schools along with fire drills, etc.

The purpose was to help protect us from any nuclear bomb that might go off near us. If we were outside, we were taught to take shelter behind anything, even a curb, face down and cover the back of our necks.

Hahaha, a serious thing, but I remember that we liked the disruption of the classes and, at least for us young boys, the chance to catch a glimpse of little Susie's knickers as all the girls wore dresses or skirts to school back then. We seldom did, but it was fun trying...

Gawd, I'm sitting here laughing at the memory of all that back then.

Chaplin was a great artist and performer. He started with simple comedy but as he got older and wiser and mellower he did begin to politicise his work. The same can be seen in the careers of many artists. I don't think it is wrong for a famous person to use their fame for political ends, far more of today's celebs do it for shallower reasons.

His famous speech at the end of The Great Dictator is rightfully considered a masterpiece.

The problem I think lay with the insanely xenophobic and right-wing American governments of the 1950s. The problem was theirs, not that of the individuals they persecuted.

I know its not anything of the same order of magnitude but the American government's hate for suspected communists and even socialists was going down the same road as the Nazi approach to foreigners of certain ethnicities or faiths. The US Govt treated Japanese-American citizens the same way in the 1940s. I think this though is common among many governments in times of crisis. Security becomes all-important and citizen's freedoms less so.

i am extremely glad that you two answered the questions, and excellently.

i think entertainers should use their fame for greater good. i was interested in the story as hayao miyazaki and isao takahata's story is somewhat similar they also had quality in mind and thats why they created ghibli and chaplin created united artist. and they are also criticized by many of the journalist for the emphasized importance of nature in their movies.

anyway thanks to both of you.

Yes it is, it seems like a lot longer to be honest but without a chat box I find myself not using the forums as often with work and all.

Wow. Nine years? It seems longer. It's so strange how one measures one's life with memories of what has happened to you.

I became a very evangelical Christian in about 1999 or 2000 and this state of euphoria lasted for a number of years. I would have said it ended in 2005 or so... but now I see that I joined the Tavern in 2006!

So I was obviously a Christian when I joined this place.

It feels so very odd.

How my mind has fogged reality. I was sure I joined the Tavern much earlier - long, long before I started to believe in stuff I now know is nonsense.

I measure my life in recollections of things I have done, people I have met and places I have been. But memory is very fickle and isn't any kind of guarantee of the actual progress of my self-awareness through time.

This realisation is a disturbing one.

I'll be missing another family event due to being too busy with school. My deadlines are approaching and I'm trying to finish- all this even though I started extremely early. It's truly a handful....no one expects to be finish in time.

I'll figure out a way. I always do. But, I'll be missing out on a baby shower.....sigh.
